Try creating a new System.mdw file:
run C:\WINDOWS\system32\WRKGADM.EXE
The workgroup administrator has a create button in it.
As for the original file, tell your client you need a copy of the MDW file he used.

Before you go any further, check out your hardware...memory problems could be causing your corruptions.
With MSDE, you get a smaller copy of SQL. There is an upgrade utility in there that will make your life easier...but the corruption may cause you problems as well.
