Well, in case any one is interested I fixed the problem with a "clean" reinstallation of Win98, which didn't take long, unfortunately reinstalling fifty or so programmes took a couple of days.

Good point; but I must point out this computer started life as a DX4-100 with Dos and Win3.11, I just can't help adding bits, anyway the drive recognition problem seems to be inside Windows as Dos and Dos based programs have no problem recognising the disk partitions and their letters.

This all good stuff, thanks to James Collins. I use a freeware or rather postcardware program called Cacheman to configure disk caching i.e. the settings under vcache. It can be found at http://www.outertech.com/index2.html
It works for me.

all boots up just fine but when partitioning by any method Win98 creates an extra drive duplicating the first partition the duplicate...

You must leave a small sector of unformatted space (8Mb approx) before your first partition on the second drive and make the partitions logical and not active.
