why not just buy a Recovery and Diagnostics disk from IBM for like 20 bucks? Then you can do whatever you like with your own retail Win98 copy. On my Aptiva i've found it much easier to just load the OS (and all their other junk) off the Recovery CD and load my own complete Win98 version...

i used my IBM recovery disk to reinstall ie4.
if you've got oem recovery stuff u should be fine. f disk etc should't be nec'y. even if not, OS disk should be ok.

I have a standby problem as well - the power light doesn't change from green to amber, and i have to restart my machine ... no flashing icons, but i think this is a software problem too ...

I had to relaod win98 (and everything) and nevertheless there are a few odditioes.
Can someone help me restore the quicklaunch toolbar icon that put me directly back to the start screen (first screen to open at start up). It was awfully handy.
Would the solution be in Regisrty manipulation? Or...
it's exacatly what i'm trying to do, Jim. I have ie 5.5 sp2 all downloaded, so i'll try the utility progrm, reinstall it and see where that leaves me.

Thank you for referring me to those threads.
I did not think i was as clear in those threads about my source problem, namely my inability to delete IE by usual methods. Neither was the question of over-writing of files during re-installation covered.
So this was a somewhat different question...
If i reload IE5.5, will it overwrite corrupted files, or just replace the whole program?
I'd delete it first, but that's a greyed-out option, i can only run 'repair' on it ...
I'm thinking to replace it because some graphics are downloading improperly - some with red X's, others with a little...
i thought the question applied to two different populations that might not overlap ...
