Quick Launch Toolbar "lost" the ICON that clicks to the Start Screen 3

I had to relaod win98 (and everything) and nevertheless there are a few odditioes.
Can someone help me restore the quicklaunch toolbar icon that put me directly back to the start screen (first screen to open at start up). It was awfully handy.

Would the solution be in Regisrty manipulation? Or some other loading technique?
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions anyone might offer ...

I'm not sure what you mean by the startup screen. Are you referring to your desktop with the icons on it ? If so, you are prob referring to the icon in the quick launch that returns you to the desktop. (Looks like a desktop and a pencil)

I'm sure it can be brought back with registry manipulation (which is beyond my advice), but there is also a keyboard shortcut that does the same thing. I deleted that icon on purpose for the room, so I use Win + D which does the same thing (hold the windows key down and tap the letter D. All open windows are minimized to the task bar . To get them back, just hit Win + D again. Win + M also minimizes all windows, but it doesn't return them, so I just use Win + D.

If what fenix said is true then you should be able to get it back (without registry editing) if you do the following (you must have unchecked the "HIDE FILE EXTENSIONs" in folder options):


Using Explorer (or MyComputer) click down to the following directory: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch


Once there, create a text file and name it: Show Desktop.txt


Open that txt file and paste the following bold text:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3

[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop


Then close and save it.


Rename the "Show Desktop.[red]TXT[/red]" to: Show Desktop.[red]scf[/red]


Confirm the "change name?" with YES.

And that's it...it should be back. I've tested this three times on my WinME and it worked.

I tried it out ror kicks and it worked as advertised.
Yes, maybe that is what the orig poster was asking about.

BTW, my notepad doesn't open to the same size that it was when it was last closed. Can you or someone else advise on a possible fix ?(it always opens to a default size, about have of the screen. I have to resize it everytime I open it for a project that I'm working on)

I did go into regedit
HKEY Current User\Software\Microsoft\notepad
and on the right side of the expl view, and I changed the 0 to a 1 under the DATA column by right clicking on fSaveWindowPositions and selecting modify. . It still reads 1 after rebooting, But it still opens at the same default size. Maybe I'm doing something wrong ? Win98 SE (.2222)

Glad to have helped. Don't forget to re-activate the "HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS" if other people are going to utilize your system.


To fenix:
If you post your own question, it's possible another person may have had the same problem you currently have; and maybe they can help you resolve it. If you post here then it diminishes the chances of more people trying to help you because it's almost hidden.
I'm currently on a ME machine. In my keys I do not have that fSaveWindowPositions KeyName. The only one I can find, close to what you are describing is fSavePageSettings, which is set as a DWORD equaling 0. I don't know if adding this keyname (with a DWORD=1) will work or not, but you can give it a go.
If it doesn't work, I'd suggest you post your question by itself, and maybe someone else will have an answer for you.
