Does it happen on all machines? It may be worth trying to flush your cache as well. Also, check it is not in your hosts file as well.

Have you tried removing one of the offending machines (ensuring you know the local administrator password first (I have seen people who have done this and have not :) )) from the domain and re-added it? It may be worth trying that if your investigations lead you to believe it is machine related...

No, not a .vbs, just a bog-standard .cmd will do, once the command line is proven to be working. If you are only running it once and never again, you could just run it from the command prompt (although you will need to do it from a machine with the Server Admin Tools installed or a DC).

Have any changes been made to your environment at all, more likely things like AD or Group Policy. That could explain it being all machines.

Can someone please let me know if it is possible to import the image of a failed backup? Lets say, for instance, that a backup gets to 215GB and then fails, surely the data that it has backed up is possible to get at?

You say that if you ping the IP it does NOT respond and that it is across the WAN? If so, check your DHCP scope has the correct entry for default gateway(003 Router). The easiest way would be on one of the affected PC's run IPCONFIG /all and ensure all entries are as they should be.

NT4 requires a rebuild to demote/promote from/to BDC's unfortunately. However, I believe there are 3rd party utils that will do it, I would imagine though that you would have no chance of support from Microsoft if you did and things went wrong.
