After the XP machine is up and running:
1. Make sure you have a valid IP for your network
2. Right-Click on my Computer | Properties
3. Go To Computer name tab
4. Enter a computer Name | Enter a domain name ("SHCOOL") or (should be school.com for domain in W2K)
5. click OK

If all of your computers have the same workgroup name: (i.e. workgroup)
change the two pc's to something else.
reboot
join the domain
reboot
Then they should be able to access the files if they are shared and have the correct permissions.

I have had to actually use some undelete software before and the only one that retrieved the most data was at http://runtime.org/gdb.htm.
They have some really nifty programs.But i don't think you could find out who deleted the files with it, unless you have auditing turned on.
