We also had problems with group policies not working in our organisation. Sysvol was corrupted on the server, needed to be reinstalled/replaced, also DNS settings have to be changed on each workstation to get GP to work.

Thanks! Had finally worked out that I had to upgrade Windows from 1st to 2nd edition to get USB to work, and once that was installed it all seems ok. Serial connection is defintely not very good.
