    ROM Cartridge Research

Thanks micker! You seem like a knowledgeable person. Do you remember...was it challenging to get the ROM programming (what language?) correct to work with the base unit? Was it trial and error? I appreciate the info.

    ROM Cartridge Research

I am conducting research into the workings of ROM Cartridges like the ones used for older Nintendo systems and LeapFrog LeapPad units. Mostly, I'm researching how these cartridges are fabricated, programmed, interfaced, etc. If anyone has a good information source (web sites, books, etc), could...

    Dell misrepresentation?

Well, I think there are config options, but the Dim 3000 currently on their web site shows the config in my first post message: P4 2.8GHz/533MHz with memory at 400MHz. I don't think this is the actual setup, and it misrepresents the system specs to unsuspecting customers.

    Dell misrepresentation?

Dell advertises their cheapo Dim 3000 with a Pentium 4 2.80GHz on a 533MHz FSB. This also includes their stated memory config of: "256MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHz". Now according to info from Intel's i865 chipset specs: "To minimize system latencies and optimize system performance 400 MHz DDR memory...

    Large HDD support

I recently replaced the HDD on an old Gateway 2000 machine with a new 40.0GB HDD. The BIOS for the Gateway will only recognize it as an 8.0GB HDD. I know this is a common problem, and Gateway has already told me that they won't be releasing a BIOS that will support HDD larger than 8.0GB. But...

Not sure what the problem is - help needed

Yes, Kjonnnn is correct. Jumpers must be moved to switch Master/Slave settings. I would also try swapping the IDE cable out for a new one. I've seen numerous (random, occasional) problems that were fixed by simply replacing the cable. If you want to test the HDD themselves, find out who makes...

    Video Card recommendation

To elaborate on smah's comment, MAKE SURE you get the latest drivers! I stopped using ATI's hardware (at AIW 7500) because their drivers always seemed to have bugs. I switched to nVidia exclusively (I run a small OEM business) about 1 1/2 yrs ago and have yet to encounter a driver problem. I...

Using a Second Hard Drive as a Backup

It sounds like data integrity is of high importance to you. I would recommend going with a RAID 1 array for maximum protection. This would give you two hard drives with identical OS and program installations, and would protect against losing data in the event of a single HD failure. It would...

    Win2000 vs. WinXP

Thanks for replying. I like the tip from CitrixEngineer about checking the version. I didn't know that one (mine, XPpro, shows 5.1.2600). My conclusion is that there are just minor differences (outside the GUI), and none that would justify my switching to 2000.

    Win2000 vs. WinXP

Could someone please explain why Win2000 would be preferable to WinXP? I'm experienced with WinXP (primarily on home PC's), but not Win2000, and I'm curious as to why anyone would choose the eldest of the two. My assumption is that there are very few differences between the two.

    DVD video playback

This sounds like an ASPI driver mis-match. You don't specify which version of WinDVD you are using, but check to see if it is compatible with Win2000: www.intervideo.com WinDVD4 is their current version (and the only one they now support), and it should work with Win2000.

    semaphore timeout

Have you installed Win 2000 Service Pack 3? If so, I would try searching the MS Knowledge base: support.microsoft.com

    Disk Shredding?

This software will do the job. www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm The U.S. Government says that data must be overwritten at least 3 times for it's image to be unrecoverable. Take that for what it's worth.

    Bad-new Motherboard

Are you getting the audible "BEEP" during POST? If you're not, or if you're getting a series of beeps, then there may be a problem with the MoBo or other components. Remove ALL PCI cards. Re-seat your video card, video connectors, and your system RAM. If you have a bootable floppy...

    PC 266 or PC133 faster?

I believe we may be mixing apples and oranges here. There is PC133 SDRAM and there is DDR266 SDRAM (PC2100). These two RAM types are not compatible, and only one will work in your motherboard. They both run on a 133MHz system bus, but the DDR (Double Data Rate) memory can transfer 2 bits per...
