I've already tried an 80 gig WD that didn't work, almost identical except for the size of the drive. From what I hear, the WDs are pretty finicky on their compatibility.
The seller is asking 65$ - plus shipping. As I said, that's pretty high, especially since it's a crap shoot and not a sure...
I had a drive cut out on me a while back, thanks to those of you that helped.
I've finally found a drive that matches the model number (WD400BB-00DEA0) however it's manufacture date is 3 years after mine (2002 v. 2005)
I've heard that the model number on WD drives indicates pretty well...
I'm trying to find a WD 40 gig hard drive to attempt to swap the PCBs on a dead drive. My drive number is "WD400" but I'm seeing it also advertised as a "WD400BB" - Are these drives the same or different? Anyone know what the "BB" stands for?
I've been reading up on swapping the PCB. I appreciate everyone's input on this matter so far.
Mainegeek - I have tried a few IDE cables. Whatever channel this drive is connected to, will end up timing out on detecting and finding nothing.
If anyone finds this thread and is in the same...
I can't see any marks on the drive itself, paprazi. I do have a similar drive, same model, but larger capacity, that's defective. It works but noisy and we don't trust anything on it. Would it be possible to exchange parts between the two to at least get access to the data and copy it over?
I'm hoping I can at least salvage my data here. I'm sure if you've been in this position before, you know how I feel.
My power supply died yesterday. When I swapped it out, my secondary HD (WD 40 gig) was no longer detected by the BIOS. It's pretty clear there's a physical drive problem...
Unfortuantely, Windows will not boot when I try this. For some reason, having the second drive on any channel makes that channel stop responding.
During Safe Mode bootup, it shows as halting at "Mup.sys" Unplugging the second hard drive makes everything run normal.
In addition to what Parabolic says, try going to Start->Run and type in "cmd" - a black box will appear. In that box, type in "ping www.yahoo.com" and find out if you get a response.
Also try "winipcfg" in the Run box as well. In the next window, make sure that whatever's in the white box...
Little update here:
I swapped out the power supply and now almost everything works. Audio is back, as is the CD-RW.... But Windows will not boot up while that second IDE drive is there, and it only gets identified in the BIOS half the time, usually after a significant delay. I tried in both...
You can change the source to record from by opening your Volume Control, clicking Options->Properties, mark the Recording section, and once you press OK you should be able to select whichever device to record from. If the device you want is not listed, you can put a checkmark beside it in the...
It could be related to something else as well. Try using different drivers, if you installed them through Windows Update, try them off your original CD, or vice-versa.
If it was working fine and the problem started only immediately after the reformat, it could be related to a software problem...
