Hi all

I am fairly new to SMS 2.0, I have used management software before, namely Tivoli and DM2. I have played around with Software Distribution in SMS and successfully built and advertised packages.

What I would like to do is 'build' a desktop image from these packages ie. install operating system, install SMS client, then send one 'package' which runs other packages in order. This was very possible under Tivoli, does anyone know if it is possible under SMS 2.0? If so are there any books\white papers or websites you could recommend.

Thanks in advance for the help

FC.

If I understand your question, you want to push the OS, or an OS image file, something like ghost, and then install software in determined order. Yes and no. You cannot push a brand new OS/Image onto a computer. You can push an upgrade, and you can push and Image. So, you could push a upgrade image to the client, but you would most likely need to copy the image to the client's hard drive and then execute the upgrade from the client. As far as pushing software in particular order, you could accomplish this in 2 ways. 1. Write a SMS installer script that calls the software in the order you want it installed or 2. create SMS adverstisements based upon the software apps. In other words, if you want to install Adobe and MS Word, in that order, create an advertisement to install Adobe on clients that do not have Adobe, then create and advertisement to install MS Word on client that have Adobe.
Hope it helps..

Thanks danoh, I don't want to push an OS, but I do need to push software in order. The installer script sound like what I'm looking for. Thanks again.
