I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

(OP)
Can someone please help me fix this error? I don't know if I should do a "repair company" or not???? I got no errors detected when I ran a "data verification" and I'm not sure about the "integrity check".
Thanks
Beth

RE: I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

I'm assuming the data is stored indeed on your hard drive.

Where does this error pop up?

Have you restored a backup to an alternate location, and then opened the data from there?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem.  Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I have a backup on disc and on the hard drive. The error occurs when I close an application and or the program. It doesn't seem to mess things up. It's more or less just a nuisance right now.

I have never had to retrieve from a backup and don't have a copy of my company as of yet to try testing things before actually doing it in my real company.

Any suggestions?
Beth

RE: I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

I'm not clear, you say you have a backup, but not a copy of your company.  Are you stating that your backups are peachtree backup files (.ptb)?

I suggest you copy the entire peachw folder to another computer if possible (if not, then to another location on your drive, say c:\backup\peachw), then restore your backup from a time before this occured.  See if it goes away.  If it doesn't then restore back your current copy (which you'll have the one in c:\backup, and you can even generate a Peachtree backup file before you start if you like).

I'm having no luck doing a restore to the "new company" I created as a copy of my existing company. I'm a single user on one computer and all I did was go to file and create new company and then copied the file setup. Then tried to restore from the most recent backup and then from older one's. None worked. I'm so frustrated. Any more suggestions? What about repairing the company? I did the integrity checks and nothing seemed to be wrong.
Thanks
Beth

So if you've restored from backups that did not have this problem, and now exhibit it when you restore them, then that rules out a data problem.  You are looking at that pc.

Perhaps a simple reinstall of Peachtree will do it.

Also, possible spyware, virus, software conflict.

What operating system are you running?
What if you boot to safe mode and run peachtree, does the message still appear when you exit.

No No, the restores would not work. They kept getting other errors when I tried to use them. Even though the backups were successful, they wouldn't restore. So, I need to fix the original error through the existing company somehow.
Will all my info still be there if I re-install Peachtree?
I'm afraid to do it if I can't even restore from my backups now.

RE: I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

Wow, so your restores are bad.  Out of curiousity, were these backups on a cd?  If so, copy them to your hard drive first, then go to the properties of the backup, and uncheck the read only attribute.  Again, you haven't give me full info, I don't know if your backups are copies of the company data folder, or .ptb files.  I'll need to know this to go into more detail, as well as what happens when you restore.  Does it just not restore?  Does it restore, but then you get errors within Peachtree?

If you wish to reinstall Peachtree, you'll be safe if you do this.

Make a peachtree backup file, .ptb

Store it in a safe location on your hard drive, say c:\backup.

Then copy the entire peachw folder (i'm assuming this is where your company is), to c:\backup as well.

Now you can uninstall/reinstall, you'll have a safe backup file, and a safe copy.

I backup on 3.5 discs. I go o file and click backup w/in the open company. Where or how Peachtree does it I'm now sure. I'm sorry, but I'm not very Tekie.

As far as the restore...It just doesn't complete and either gets an error or keeps saying to insert the disc(s) when there is already one in the drive. So, I'm assuming they're bad, but don't know why since they were fine at the time of the backups.

I use PT 2003. I'm guessing I would have to re-install the main program CD along with all the updates and tax tables???? I'm really leary of doing this. Isn't there another way to fix it w/in the existing?????

If you don't want to accept the advice given here, then you can call Peachtree support.  They may have details on exactly what the error is, or they'll tell you your data is corrupt and too bad for you.

Don't backup to floppies in the future.  This is what you get.  You backup a company on several floppies, and then one doesn't work.  CD backups go bad too.  If you really want to protect your data, then you'll want to purchase a tape drive.

At this point I can pretty much tell you have no backup.  Therefore, you are down to either fixing a software issue, or your data is corrupt and you are screwed.

So, again, either try to reinstall per my instructions, or call tech support.

If it turns out your data is damaged, these guys claim they can fix it, for $450.

RE: I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

I had the same problem with Peachtree Complete Accounting 2004. I had installed Microsoft Office so I could export some data from Peachtree to an Excel spreadsheet. The problem appeared after I exported the data. I have 3 companies set up, but the I/O error message only showed up that one. The other two were fine. As Beth said, it seemed to be more of an annoyance than anything. It didn't seem to affect my data.

I use an external Zip drive to back up my data and fortunately had a backup from right before the problem appeared. (It's things like this that make me a firm believer in frequent backups.) I was able to restore my data as a "new company", and had to re-enter some data, but so far the restored company seems to be working.

Another suggestion for Beth... You could start from scratch and set up a whole new company. Although that could be time-consuming, depending on how complicated your company is.

I beleive the rest of the message reads "unable to read or write to the file"  If this is correct...I experienced the same problem.  My solution was to rename the "UserPref.DAT" file to "UserPref.OLD" and open Peachtree again.  You should not receive the error message and a new file will be created.  You may find some Preferences have gone back to default, but you need only to change them back to the way you had it to begin with.

Can you please tell me how to rename it?
Thanks
Beth

RE: I/O Error - C:\peachw\towcouli\UserPref.DAT

just search for the file or browse to the path listed in the error (in your posting) and rt click select rename and change the extension to .old
