RE: How can you lock a workstation in novell?

Novell offers a product called Single Sign On (SSO) that does what you are looking for. They incorporated a widely known product called SFLOCK into SSO and also added some other bells and whistles. (actually the part that you are looking for is a small part of the overall package benefits). Here's the link to SSO

Hope this helps!

Also, you can lock down a workstation with Zenworks. This allows for policies and profiles but I find it easier to do using nwadmin rather than config.pol.

Zenworks will lock down the workstations to whatever degree you want.

ZENworks will allow policies that lock users out of being able to install software, change system settings and so forth. It does so by letting you assign workstation and or user policies. If that is what you are trying to do, then yes, ZENworks is AWESOME.

I thought you were looking for a utility that would allow a user to "lock" his/her desktop when they get up to go get a cup of coffee, or if they forget to logout, you can have a set timeout that the workstation will ask for authentication before letting the user use it again. These features are part of Single Sign On.

It all just depends on what you are trying to "lock"

Thanks Guys,

SSO looked like a good solution-but it would be out of budget to install it on all the workstations.

the sys administrator decided to use the screen saver feature in windows and enable a password with the screen saver, as an econmical fix.

(so the workstations could be left on overnight for virus scan and still be inaccessable to anyone without a password, and if an unauthorized person reboots they will be confronted with the novell network login)
thanks again, -j
