We are trying to use code 39 as a bar code font. The problem is that when you put in a space, the scanner will not read the bar code at all. I have tried using ~, =, _ in place of a space and tried * and ! to enclose the bar code as well without any luck. Can some one suggest a solution??

You need to purchase a Code39 Barcode font that supports spaces.
This one does you substitute an Underscore for each space and it shows up correctly
It comes with a VBA function to do this for you.
