Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
I was trying to merge my C & D drives together using PartionMagic, WITHOUT first making a backup.(I KNOW, IKNOW)
Upon completion.....  I cannot boot my laptop.  I have tried to repair with XP PRO disk, but I don't know what to do?   How do I access my folders and possibly save some of my smaller files to disk...or onto the network?

Please help!!!!

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Using your WINXP cd start the recovery console, check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us... for details and check out the Fixboot and fixmbr commands. They should see you right.

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
The actual error I am receiving is:

I/O error accessing boot sector file
multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\BOOTSECT.DOS

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

in your boot.ini file your laptop is looking for boot information in your d drive as referenced by the "partitio(1)" reference in your boot.ini. Well since there is no longer a d partition there is nothing there to boot into. However i wonder why your os was on the d drive. Anywho the above suggestion of the recovery consol should get you going. Just wanted to let you know why this had happened.

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
I checked C:\> type boot.ini and it came up with
[boot loader]
timeout 30
default=C:\
[operating systems]

What exactly does this tell me?

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

[boot loader]
timeout = 60
default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional New" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS1 = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Old" /fastdetect

Is mine. as you can see i dual boot xp pro.one is located at c:\windows and the other is located at c:\windows1. I belive that if you modify that file to...

[boot loader]
timeout 30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

that you should be able to boot into your xp install. However im not absolutly certain that will work or if that is a totaly off the wall idea. Im sure others will let you know wether you should do that or not. Please wait for them. I had a simalar problem as you and that is what i ended up having to do was replace my boot.ini file. I HTH

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

thyzer,
If you follow the instructions I gave then it will scan your computer and rebuild the Boot.ini file.

If you insist on editing your boot.ini file the the following ( as discussed by flyingwolf) ahould hopefully work.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
gpalmer.....I did try all the things you recommended....I looked over the microsoft reference...and tried ther options...but when I boot up it goes to a black screen and gives me two options to boot to (i only have one OS).  Both options when selected...come up with the error I have shown previously.

Gpalmer...I appreciate your help but might need a little more hand holding on this one!  I don't quite understand what to do and not to do when dealing with the recovery DOS commands.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Thyezer, To start the Recovery Console insert the Windows XP installation CD and then Switch your Computer on. Allow the computer to boot into the Windows XP Setup. When The Welcome to Setup Screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

This will boot your computer to what appears to be a dos prompt.

It will prompt your for the administrator password. This is likely to be blank, unless you have specifically changed it.

After entering you correct password type the following.

Fixboot c:

It should do it's work, when finished remove the CD from the drive and restart your machine.

This should have solved your problem, if not then let us know. You may need to enter the recovery console again and use the fixmbr command.

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
my machine is not prompting me for any password?
I tried the fixboot and it says it completed it...but I am continuing to get the same error.

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Ok repeat the process but this time type

Fixmbr

when that is completed type

fixboot c:

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
After the fixboot...
I now at reboot get:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Can I get this file from the XP CD?

How do I add that to my computer from the recovery program?

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

One more thing to try, again in the recovery console type

bootcfg /rebuild

For official MS word on this matter take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us...

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
tried bootcfg /rebuild

Error: Failed to sucessfully scan disks for windows installtions.  This error may be caused by a corupt file system, which would prevent Bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detect any disk errors.

I tried chkdsk /p

NO ERRORS Found!!!!

Any ideas from here....

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Did you create the Partition Magic Recovery Disks?

Try chkdsk c: /p /r[/]

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
No!!!  No recovery disks made.   I had just done a full system backup to dvd...but that dvd was destroyed (thrown in trash and burned).   If i didn't have bad luck...i wouldn't have any luck at all!!!

Tried chkdsk c: /p /r[/]

finished
no errors found

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

What does your boot.ini file look like now?

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

My idea what happend is :
Partition magic didn't finish (fact).
The partition table was wasted .
PM sets the partition type to pqrp .
Before running merge partitions you should
Disable virus or boot sector protection
in your computer’s BIOS
PartitionMagic is unable to write to/read from that specific sector on the hard disk.

For Xp use PArtition Magic 8 .
You can install PM8 at another computer
and make the rescue disks from there .
Start with partinfo.

Then you can run

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
I am so sorry for not pointing this out earlier....
My system was set up with the D: as the boot drive and my C: as a system drive.   I don't know if that makes a difference?

I am trying the PM8 rescue disks now that I am at home...I have PM8 installed here too.   Will there be a problem with using these disks made from my home computer with drives C; as boot drive and D: as system?   I mean...my laptop was configured wrong in the first place...that was why I attempted to merge the 2 local drives together on it.
(ONE HD)LAPTOP:  D: drive = Boot
                 C: drive = system

(ONE HD)HOME:    C:Drive = Boot
                 D:drive = System

Can I use the rescue disks that were created on the properly formatted HOME computer on the LAPTOP?

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Use the partinfo program to examine the
partition(s) ,and ptedit to examine the partition tables.
Doesn't matter where the disks was made.

You can aslo use the pqboot program to
alter part attributes like active/hidden etc.
The boot partition shold be "active" .

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Edit the boot.ini
Make it like this:

[boot loader]
timeout = 30
default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Boot from partition 1" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS = "Boot from partition 2" /fastdetect

Try booting with the different choices .

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
how can i edit my boot.ini file?  I copied it into notepad...put it to floppy...then what...I am in the recovery part of XP and I don't know if I can move that file from floppy to the correct location..or how to that is?

I Made rescue disks for PM8  and tried loading with them:
It says:
PARTION       TYPE   SIZE MB   USED   UNUSED  STATUS PRI/LOG
*:Local Disk  NTFS   30004.2  6159.6  23844.5 Active  pri
*:            Ext     8142.3    0      0       None   pri
  *:         Unall    8142.3    0      0       None   Log
*:           Unall    7.8       0      0       None   Pri

Should I mess with this PM8 stuff...or just try copying over the boot.ini file?  Or both?

Thanks

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Thyezer,

Are you able to take the HDD out of the Laptop and connect it to a normal IDE port in another PC.  You will have to use a connector to allow you to hook your 2 and a half inch Laptop drive into a normal IDE port on a desktop pc motherboard.  This will allow you to connect the drive as a second drive and then browse to it via explorer.

If you can do this you may be able to browse your files and copy them onto another disk.  Failing that, I think that you may be out of luck...

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
I thought about that...If that is my only option...I will try it...but I would need to purchase this connector.  ANyone have anything else I can try...or list how to copy the boot.ini file over?

Thanks

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

HELP!!!!

Perhaps try creating and booting the NTFS Reader DOS Boot Disk from the following link:

http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm.

If this gives you access to your data, then from your PM8 listing, it appears that you have about 8GB of unallocated space from which you could create a FAT32 drive and use the above program to copy data from the NTFS Drive to the newly created drive.

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Seems you have 2 primary partitions .
One NTFS with size 30GB
One 8GB that is extended .

Your old setup had two disks
c: partition1
d: partition2
Your old boot.ini
was located on d: and pointed to multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

Now you merged them into one partition nr.1
so the boot ini in that system is pointing to a
partition that does not exist .

How was the sizes in the old configuration .
Did the merging complete , and failed during restart .
Or did it fail in the middle of the prossess .
(i wonder about the 8GB partition left there ,if this
is a part of your D: )

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

If datarecovery is the only way out .
I suggest using pebuilder
to make a "ultimate boot cd" that runs Windows PE from cdrom .
Read/writes on NTFS partitions ,networking and more.

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Has to build the ISO image and burn it to a cd using nero .

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

I think the contents of your d partition got transferred to a folder in the c partition.
So I guess your boot.ini if at all it exists in c partition should point to that folder

case 1
[boot loader]
timeout = 30
default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\foldername]\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\[foldername]\WINDOWS = "Windows XP" /fastdetect

[foldername]=the name of the folder where the d partition was moved to...

Psst...did the PM ask you to enter a folder name when you chose to merge..I think you are required to enter the folder name if you can remember...
case 1. did you merge d to c - if so then d will become a folder of c
case 2. did you merge c to d - if so then c will become a folder of d

Sorry if I am wrong...

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Dan-
I took partition F and merged it into partition C
It was moved into a folder called "fdrive"

I think my problem was that I was assuming that C partion was my boot partition and it wasn't.  I will try your boot.ini idea...

Thanks

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

(OP)
well....
I creted the PE BUILDER disk and booted into my laptop.  I can see that I hace a c directory
THERE IS NO WINDOWS dir!!!!!

I checked in the before mentioned ddrive and fdrive folders (merged partitions) and there is nothing in those?

F drive used to be my boot drive and now it looks empty.
C drive is what I merged it all to and it has NO WINDOWS folder?
Can anyone suggest anything to fix this system...or am I only going to be able to manually transfer data away and format again , install XPPRO?

Thanks

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

does fdrive contain anything....related to windows installation...

Could it be hidden...

Maybe now c drive got to become the Active partition...

Situations doesn't look good

RE: Bad Boot Sector error!!!! HELP!!!!

Recover the data and clean reinstall. Odds are that even if you do ever 'recover' the original installation and get it to boot, you'll have ongoing problems - so best to bite the bullet now (you could spend a long time trying otherwise).

Just my opinion of course!
