Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

I am presently using Corel 8 for mac.  I have had numerous problems with this program but I do like some of it's capabilities....Adding dimensions to objects...making a drawing to a particular scale 1/4" = 1' etc....and multi page files.  Can anyone compare Illustrator with the cad tools and multi page add on modules to Corel?

RE: Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

Hi Todd,

I can't compare the two as I've only been using Illustrator for a few months w/o any add-ons but I am curious what type of problems you've run into with the Mac version of Corel Draw? I'm thinking of getting a copy of Corel Draw 10 for Mac when its released in July and was always curious how it performed.

RE: Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

Corel has many tools but not without problems.  The most persistent problem that I have experienced is unexpected quitting of the program when exiting a file. I had heard that Corel does not work well with Quick Time 4.  I installed Quick Time 3 but it is still quitting on me. I would say that this occurs about once every other time that I use the program.

RE: Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

Well, I'd watch out on the quick time abilities of corel.
Yes, its great that corel has the ability to edit video "somewhat", but I wouldn't go ahead and make any demands just for this feature.

You can't blame corel for everything, yes it may be buggy. but it could also be quicktime/corel configuration.  I mean, I've had situations where corel works, I install something else, corel doesn't work, uninstall it, corel works.

RE: Question about Illustrator vs. Corel 8

OMG Todd!
How do you get any work done!? I've been working in illustrator since version 5.5 (that's before the internet) and I've since dubbed Corel the bane of my existance. First off, they're based in Canada where reverse engineering isnt illegal so Corel could decompile illustrator and actually yank the code. Im not against good features in many apps, but steal the whole thing if you're gonna steal, not just enough to make it crash. And speaking of code, Corel forces you to go about the most convaluted, un-intuative, non-artist-like, meathods to get even the simplest task done. Not to mention the node-heavy crap it gives you when your done. You wanna good laugh, open a Corel document in illustrator and do a select all. There's a very good reason Adobe has been the undisputed super-power of desktop publishing (and now the web) for almost 20 years... They invented it.
