IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
i service a small business with 6 machines (all running w2k).

two of these machines have the exact same problem: certain pages do not load the graphics.  it is an intermittent problem.  for instance, home.yahoo.com and belarc.com both do not display the graphics.  if you F5 (refresh) it still will not show the graphics.  HOWEVER, if you change the encoding to Western European (ISO) or Western European (Windows) it WILL display the graphics.  subsequent refreshes (after you've change the encoding) will again NOT show the graphics.  a quick check of the encoding reveals that it is still encoding at Wester European (ISO or Window) which ever you chose.  in other words, the encoding selection has not changed, but you are now unable to view the graphics.

other pages that are viewed with the same machines load just fine.  for example msn.com shows all the graphics (and there are quite a few)...

so...  the problem is intermittent in the fact that not all pages load graphics.  however, the problem is consistent in the fact that pages that don't load graphics NEVER load graphics (unless you change the encoding).

these are the fixes i've tried with no success (cold booting in between):
1) selecting 'auto-select' in the encoding menu.
2) clearing the temporary internet files cache.
3) reinstalling ie6 over the current installation.
4) editing the registry value (per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 283807) to the following:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage set as default to C_28591.NLS

the KB article (283807) seems to deal with persistent non-display of graphics (for ALL web pages), but i thought i'd give it a try anyway.

i'd rather not wipe the machine just for this, but if that's the solution....

any help would be much appreciated...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Go to Tools, Internet Options, Settings (on the General tab), View Objects.  What is the status of your Java? (You may have to switch to View > Details to see this...)

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
i've actually already re-installed Java thinking this may have been the problem.  no dice.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I'm wondering if it's certain types of graphics, i.e. does it appear to be pictures that don't show up, or other types of graphics (animations, whatever)?  Are you getting red x's where graphics should be?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

And...wiping the machines should only be a last resort.

Reinstalling IE won't necessarily fix problems.  It's best to run the Repair tool.  I don't use 2k, but you should be able to kick off the repair tool by going to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, highlight IE, click Add/Remove and select Repair from the options menu.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
yes, it's red x's if it doesn't load.  i agree that wiping the machine should be a last resort, but i'm about done with this!!!  i spent a couple hours over there the other day trying a bunch of different solutions (beside the ones listed above) with no success.  i'll post a list of those other solutions i tried later today (hopefully).

add/remove programs doesn't list IE or M$IE or anything like that.  the only options i've seen for helping to take IE completely off the machine have been for W2K machines running SP1 or less.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Ok...try going to Start, Run and typing in msinfo32.exe
In the window titled Microsoft System Information, go to Tools.  You should see and Internet Explorer Repair Tool listed there.

Also, try this:

Shut down all progams and go to Start > Run

Type in each of these commands seperately and hit OK.  Wait for confirmation.

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

Restart your pc.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I've been encountering the same problem for the past few days on my Win98 box, running Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus 2003.  I just switched from Roadrunner Cable Internet to SBC Yahoo! DSL service, and I recently upgraded my Norton Antivirus from a roughly 1999 version to 2003.  I've tried tons of things to fix this and nothing's done the trick.  My only workaround is to constantly change the encoding settings from the View menu.  I've noticed that when I put it on Auto-Select, all the web pages are fine until it finds one that's set to display at "Western European (ISO)".  dell.com, netgear.com, & windows.com are good examples of pages where my images are simply boxes with red Xs until I select "user defined" as the encoding setting.

Not sure what it is that screwed it up, but Netscape's still working just fine, as is the WinXP box that's networked off of the same DSL connection through my Netgear 802.11b router.  I too have tried reinstalling and repairing IE 6 SP1, checking for new updates, even uninstalling the SBC DSL issued browser (which is based off of IE - which makes me believe that may have been a culprit).  Next I'll probably try uninstalling my Norton products to see if they might be the cause.  Did the suggestions offered by carrr help out?  And do you think I could use these on my Win98 machine?  Thanks for any suggestions in advance. . .

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
i hadn't seen that KB article before, but i had tried all the stuff in it (that pertained to me anyway)...  my client does not have the norton internet security or norton personal firewall on the system.

i tried changing the value of the encoding key in the registry, but no dice.  changing the encoding only seems to be a workaround.

i still need to try carr's advice from above, but i haven't been back to the office yet for any length of time.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

well, I have sbc yahoo dsl and this happened to me the first time I installed it and  I kept changing the encoding to western european windows for a few days and it went away by itself .

I had to re-install my dsl software again and it's happening again so I guess i'm going to have to be patient and wait for it to go away because nothing I try worksd either...

p.s. if you find a solution , plz post it here cuz this is ANNOYING  ..:/

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Okay - here's what worked for me (finally).  I first uninstalled everything (all SBC Yahoo! DSL software, Norton Internet Security 2000, Norton Utilities 2002, and Norton Antivirus 2003).  As I was completing the back up of all my important files (getting ready to reinstall Win98), I decided - what the heck - let me try it one more time.  I loaded up the basic SBC Yahoo software again, and magically - the problem had disappeared.  In the meantime I had deleted quite a few useless files and programs from my harddrive, so I'm not quite sure what did the trick.  I think in the end that it was a combination of software from the DSL install CD.  My suggestion to anyone else with this SBC Yahoo DSL problem - try either disabling from the msconfig startup utility or uninstalling completely a few of the Yahoo products at a time until you get it to work for you.  Good luck - and I hope I never run into this problem again.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

That last bit of advice has always been good.  Ever since the beginning of dial-up modems ISP's have installed all kinds of junk with your connection. Unneccessary in the most part.
For DSL,usually all that is needed is that the tech's know the MAC address of the modem and your pc knows the user name and password to use when connecting.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have same problem with Windows 98 and have tried everything.  By switching the encoding on IE I have been able to get images to load.  The problem first started when I loaded MSN 8.

Has anyone or Microsoft found solution?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

:( nope, i'm still trying but no luck. for now ,i'm switching the encoding same as you ...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hi all

I have been trying to fix this problem for a few months.  I have searched almost daily to try to find a solution but to no avail.  I have just two computers networked through a cheapy edimax router.  If I take the router out of the loop and connect direct it seems to fix the problem.  Not sure why.  Reinstallation does not work.  I have tried it twice.  It will be a huge waste of time unless you do not install SP1.  Hopefully this will save some other poor soul from wasting the amount of time I have used trying to fix this hellish problem.  I have never had a problem I did'nt find or figure out a fix for, but this one is definitely my nemesis right now.  I'll be glad to post back if I find a proper fix.  Hate like hell running without my hardware firewall in the meantime.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I am yet another that has been getting the red x
I have gone to the microsoft support pages
tries all the options
called my provider to make certain they are not blocking and scripting or ads or anything like that.
I did the ie repair
updated my java and active x
I simply do not understand what is happening and why or how to fix it.
I use zone alarm but get the same results with it shut down
so Im only voicing my own frustration here and hope that someone stumbles on the solution
Ive tried all that I found posted on the net so far!
thanks for listening

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I had the Internet Explore picture display problem described on this thread.  I was able to fix it this morning by following the instructions at the Micrsoft link listed on this thread
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B283807
The fix to the problem involved editing the registry.  This was item 10 on the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 283807.
The problem is described in the article.  A reference to a file is missing in the registry.  When a web page is being displayed that is encoded in Western European (ISO) pictures are not displayed if the registry is incomplete.  This was the first time I've ever edited the registry I had no problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I was having a similar problem and finally just fixed it. Apparently the Visual Basic Script Support was missing or corrupt.  I downloaded and installed  the Windows Script 5.6 update (file name scr56en.exe) from Microsoft and now my IE6 works.  I was getting a blank screen on some pages. Also, even though the update says it is for 98,ME, and NT4 I decided to try it on my XP since I couldn't find one listed for XP.  It worked. Afterwards I ran MS update and also Norton SystemWorks WinDoctor just to be safe.  Hope this helps someone else.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

that didn't work for me sadly... I don'tt know what i did the last time to fix it .plz keep posting more suggestions everyone i'll try anything !

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Sorry for my bad English!

I have fixed this problem by means of the tool named TCP Optimizer at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

After selecting "Custom Settings", please open the "Other Settings" tab and delete any number existing in the box "Max Connections per Server" and "Max Connections per 1.0 Server".

Select "Apply Changes" and reboot.

In my case the problem has disappear.

Best Regards

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Here's everything I have on the dredded Red X

1. Go to - View - encoding - select "western european (windows)"             repair ie if not sticking

2. Check that Show Pictures has not been disabled:

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options\Advanced - scroll down to Multimedia and
 tick " Show Pictures"
 untick "show image placeholders"
 Click OK .

3.  Restore Default Associations for Graphics File Types :

Go to Folder Options/File Types, and make sure that the following file types are associated by default with Microsoft Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe):
ART image (.art)
GIF image (.gfa, .gif)
JPEG image (.jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg)

4. Install the latest version of "Microsoft Virtual Machine"
http://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/pub/systems/win95/fixes/VM/msjavx86.exe

5. It could be caused by your firewall

6. If some of the images are on adverts and you have "spyblocker" installed - this will not only block some ad's but also show a red X instead of a picture

7. Of course it could be that the pictures are no longer on the website - could you give an example of website and picture which is not working for you ?

8." cleaning " your computer may also clear this problem so....
delete your temporary files.....your temporary internet files.....and clear your ie history

9. Check out this Microsoft link :-

Web Page Displays an Image As a Red X or Not at All (Q283807) :-

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I last posted on this message in January in the first thread started by CleverCrow. We STILL have two users in our agency that cannot view some gifs. Today I found MY answer (as I have seen from previous posts nothing seems to work for everyone  )!!!!! From reading this post. It IS related to the ISO character encoding. The registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\nls\CodePage has registry settings for numerous encodings. I discovered that each registry entry that exists needs to point to the appropriate .nls file in the Winnt\System32 directory. 28591 is the encoding for western European (ISO). This value was missing. The file itself is on the Windows 2000 CD as c_28591.nl_ . I extracted it using extract.exe and then just copied it to the Winnt\System32 directory. I then created another value under the CodePage key called 28591 with the value of c_28591.nls. Reboot. Worked like a charm.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

^ dude i wish i understood what u were saying haha but i know zilch about computers and to do something as complicated as that sounds ,is beyond me ...and thank God it's fixed ! :D

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have been unable to make any of the posted solutions work.  Still working on IE6 and sporadic pics, like the Yahoo title bar.  However, I've found that when I load the same screens using AOL 9.0, the graphics all load...even those that I had been told wouldn't load in AOL by the online college computer techs.  Any suggestions to fix my IE6 would be appreciated.

Thanks!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

bleh , it only lasted a few days .now i'm back at square one again ...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hi there.  First of all, I found this thread tonight searching through Google.com for possible answers to my problem.  I just had to sign up and make an account here.

I'm glad I found this thread.  It seems to have a lot of suggestions in solving this problem that many of us are plauged with.

I have been up all night trying many of these very valid suggestions, yet I'm still having trouble.  I too have SBC Yahoo DSL (like several of you have posted) and have the same problem with images not loading on specific pages.  I too have to right-click and switch the "Western European (ISO)" character encode and select "Western European (Windows)" or something other just to get my page to load correctly!

As I've said, I've been up ALL night trying to solve this and haven't found a solution yet.  I'm going to bed in two minutes here, so I'll discuss this more tomorrow.  Hey, maybe I'll find a solution (yeah... sure).  If anybody has anymore suggestions or can elaborate on somebody else's suggestions PLEASE DO!!!  I am determined to destroy this beast of a problem!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Actually, before I go I will ask a question or two.  First I will need to quote "krbam":

"krbam (TechnicalUser) Sep 25, 2003
Reboot. Worked like a charm."

Ok, I'm brand new to registry files and such, but through much searching I found out what to do.  I went into my registry by start>run>typing "regedit"> ... eventually linking myself to the "codepage" where all the .nls files are, and I realized that the value for the cp_28591.nls  file (that's how it's named in Win '98), the value wasn't blank, it was set and the numbers matched each other.  So I guess that's correct then, huh?

Well, then I see at the top there's a "default" feature with no set value.  Can I enter a code in the default (say cp_28592.nls) and that will make my pages choose to load with a different encode, or am I totally just going off into my own world of crazy ideas that won't work?

Also, another stupid question... can you just delete the cp_28591.nls file in MS dos, or will this cause problems with IE6?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I posted here before, but I wanted to let folks using SBC Yahoo DSL know that I fixed the problem for myself and SOMEONE ELSE using the exact same system config and SBC Yahoo DSL software.  His problem was identical, and we fixed it by disabling some of the programs launched automatically on system startup.  I'll have to check later to see what they were, but try running msconfig, going to the STARTUP tab, and deselecting a few things that look to be associated with Yahoo or SBC DSL (Yahoo Pager was one of them I think).  Reboot and give IE6 another try.  That worked for both of us, with our Win 98 first edition boxes running IE6.  Lemme know if it works for you Jackson VFR.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Well Spidey373... I was happy to see that you suggested de-selecting programs at startup in your last post as opposed to your previous post where you suggestions were more about uninstalling some software.

So, I went ahead and went to msconfig then to "startup" and one by one I de-selected all I could find to have come from my SBC yahoo DSL install disk.

Here's what I ended up de-selecting:

IPInSightMonitor 01 --- C:\ProgramFiles\SBCYahoo!ConnectionManager...etc

BJCFG --- C:\ProgramFiles\BroadJumpClient...etc

Connection Manager --- C:\Progra~1\SBC...etc

And that's really all I found in there to be assocaited with SBC Yahoo DSL.

I got frustrated and decided I'd try to uninstall some programs that are affiliated as well.  Here's what I uninstalled:

Yahoo Companion
Yahoo Messanger
SBC Yahoo Parental Controls
Yahoo! Internet Mail
SBC Yahoo! DSL Tools
Yahoo! Log In
Yahoo! Messanger Explore Bar

My REMAINING affiliated programs are:

BroadJump ClientFoundation
BroadJump CorrectConnectEngine
SBC Connection Manager
SBC Yahoo! Dial
SBC Yahoo! DSL

By the way, did you have the same problem as in that you'd enter a specific non work page and your character encode would be selected to "Western European (ISO)", but when you pick a different encode... say "Western European (Windows)", it would display the page correctly?  I'm just making sure.

Because Krbam seems to swear that the problem is the .nls file for "Western European (ISO).  I did check mine and the value matched up for it.

Argggggghh, I'm so confused.  I keep bouncing back between solutions, going "that's gotta be it!!", and nothing seems to work.

If you tell me anything more... narrow down the programs or anything Spidey, please do!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Sorry, my post in kind of confusing to read.  Guess I should've reviewed it.  This problem's got me nutty.

I left out that none of those deselected start up programs nor uninstalled programs had any effect on my problem, which is pretty obvious in my post even though I didn't say it.

Oh, and I did restart often inbetween all that.  I'd uninstall one or two programs, write down which one's I uninstalled, then I'd restart.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

In response to JacksonVFR's post - yes, my probably was the same as you describe, with the encoding almost never being set properly and always having to manually readjust it until the picture loaded properly.

I don't have the exact same programs in my Startup tab under msconfig as you deselected.  Here are the ones I deselected - Yahoo! Pager, BJCFD, tgcmdprovidersbc, Connection Manager.  I suggested my friend deselect the same, and his began working immediately.  Keep in mind we're not using the SBC Yahoo provided browser.  I only browse the internet through my trusty IE 6.0.

The programs that still show up in my list from the Start menu include DSL Connection, SBC Yahoo DSL Utilities, SBC Yahoo DSL, SBC Yahoo Messenger, Uninstall SBC Yahoo Messenger, SBC Yahoo Dial, (and I think this came with it. . . ) Efficient Networks EnterNet 300.

Sorry if this doesn't help anyone else.  But that's about the extent of my info on the subject.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I had this issue, which I could reproduce 100% of the time.  It may not be the same as this, but sounds very close.  I was changing some web pages, to make my them local from a hard drive w/o being served from a web server.  When I changed the link from a http:// to a file://, but the correct local location, IE would just hang.  It would never finish loading the page with that reference.  IE would load the same file when served from xitami.  Netscape loaded it no problem with either way.

And after trying to load it a few time in IE, eventaully no pic format would load, not even the google image, etc...

I found that by removing the file association with .png file (which as set to MS Photo Editor), by going to MY Computer -> tools -> folder options, select PNG and delete.  Next locate a PNG file in windows explorer, double click, and when prompted, associate with IE.

Now no problems at all.  Might be worth a try.  Oddly, now PNG doesn't show up in my File Associations at all, but windows explorer does show it with an IE icon.

So you may need to re-do/remove file associations with various image types, just types associated with MS Photo Editor seemd to cause this issue for me.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Thanks for the suggestion ElroyJetson.

I deleted the association with .PNG files under folder options just a minute ago.

How do I associate .PNG files with Internet Explorer now?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Find a .png file on your computer

Highlight the file - Hold down shift and right click the file - on the menu choose "open with" scroll down to "iexplore" highlight - tick "always use this program to open the type of file" and click ok.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

About redoing a file association:
The method steamwiz detailed is the least work and least error prone.  Letting windows redo the association rather than editing it seems to always work best.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that once IE got to the point where absolutely no pics would load (all red-x's), I had to reboot before IE would display images again.  I'm not sure if a reboot was required after the png file association, but it may have been.

------------------------------------------------------------

FYI: the page that absolutely would not load was like this -
Go to a directory (C:\junk) with a png and a gif file like junk.png and junk.gif, make a file "junk.htm",
text edit it with
<HTML>
<BODY>
<IMG SRC="junk.gif">
<IMG SRC="junk.png">
</BODY>
</HTML>

Open IE, type in the location: file://C:/junk/junk.htm

On all of the PC's I tried, the gif would load, the png would not, and after multiple tries, IE was all messed up - eventually no images.
You can change the html to <img src = "file://C:/junk/junk.png" >, but that has no effect.
Once I changed the PNG association to IE, it loaded fine.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have been pulling my hair out with this problem. However I may have come up with what the problem is, I just need to know some info first. Can anyone tell me what the following files do and where I can acquire them?
iecont.dll, and iecontlc.dll. When I did the msinfo32.exe search, i identified these two dll's as file missing.
I did a reinstall of IE but it did NOT get the dll files.
Also if anyone else is having this problem, would you check to see if you have these dll files?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have been searching the web for an answer to this problem and came upon this forum. I have windows me and recently upgraded to IE6. Some but not all web pages won't load graphics (i get boxes with red X's). I have to go into View and change the encoding from Western European (ISO) to Western European (Windows) or Unicdoe, then I get the graphics.  I just searched for the files iecont.dll and iecontlc.dll and didn't find them.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I finally resoved the problem by running a service pack overtop of IE. I have ran the SP before, so somehow the settings and scripts are being messed with> I am monitoring the service pack and files changes it made now since it did restore my gifs and graphics to me.
BTW, I have also done all the other tasks and attempted all the other fixes recommended by MS and all of you fine IS specialists to no avail. The SP I used was simply the one the system pointed to when I arrived at the IE page @ microsoft.com and plugging IE service Pack in the product line. I did the same thing on other machines that were afflicted and they have all been restored to normalcy now also.
I would highly recommend going into details and noting the files that are affected so that you may also moitor your system for changes to these files that may cause a reoccurrence of the ailment.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
how did you restore the individual files?  did the IE6 SP do it automatically?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Having followed this string for some time and implemented the most likely-looking solutions, with only partial success, I'm going to use Netscape as my default browser and Opera when I need speediness. I'm fed-up with Microsoft's suck-it-and-see methods, they invariably mess up my systems and make us do the work they should have done themselves. Service Pack = Oops!

I may be defeatist but I've got better things to do than other people's jobs.

Good luck with the quest.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Seems as though there are multiple solutions to this problem. What worked for me was using TCP Optimizer as described by user letrahis on September 16th.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

One of my machines had a red-x graphics problem with Internet Explorer 6 - particularly bad on performing a page refresh, and related to the Norton Firewall being enabled. The registry value for MaxConnectionsPerServer was too high for Norton to cope with. I believe this is the default value:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 2

I found the red-x problems started at values above 8.

For good measure you can set MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server to be the same value.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

This problem has bugging me for ages as my ad banners on my site keep appearing as Image Not Found and the red cross. However I have just managed to resolve it. I have tried all of the things I found and spent hours on it but in the end found that it is Kazaa that causes the problem. When you install Kazaa lite it modifies the file c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. It creates many entries that are designed to stop images being loaded from certain sites that are related to advertising but it goes a little over the top to say the least.

You should only require in this file ...

127.0.0.1   localhost

However Kazaa Diet and Lite can install many other sections and lines designed to bloack images from certain well known sites. Get rid of all these extra lines and leave just the local host entry and then try your pages again and the images should then appear!

P.S. Just uninstalling Kazaa doesn't work either as it leaves the HOSTS file in this daft state!

Hope it helps!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

As I have been searching the web for an answer as well, trying some suggestions aboven I combined 2 to make it easy for me and IT WORKED!! Thank you all!

My problems were:
Some times pages did load with pictures, some times they didn't. Links seamed dead, page refresh didn't work. Pages couldn't load at all. Lot's of red crosses. Strange thing was that on my other pc these pages worked. So..

I am a cable user, behind a software and hardware firewall , proxy disabled, virusscan on and a KLite++ user.

Using tcp/ip optimizer as suggested above somewhere and reducing the amount of MaxConnections Per Server as suggested above made the change easy. But if this isn't the case, you can try many other things as well.

As I am Dutch.. i had many troubles for example loading the next page.. www.foxkids.nl  (my kids couldn't load the page anymore)

(Nice about tcp/ip optimizer is that you can back up your own 'default' settings and try whatever combination without messing it up and the need to write down what you did. Retoring is easy.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

i've a thread:
Thread779-685314 about a similar problem: winXP pro, all windows updates installed and when i goto this page http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/index.html
the page never ends downloading because of a particular .jpg.
From this browser window if i try to navigate to any website, i see NO imgs at all, but if i close it and open another broswer window and go to any webpage except that mysql one i can see all the imgs.
I read this
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US...
and ms sent me a patch that didnt solve my problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I also had several pages that would not open with IE 6, but would with other browsers.  What corrected this problem was to go the the advance tab on under internet options and uncheck the box for "enable third party extensions" and everything worked fine

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

hi
where exactly can i find that enable 3rd party...?
thanks

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

IE-tools...internet options....advanced....make sure "enable third party browser extensions" is unchecked

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

i've winXP pro, ie6 and NTFS and cant find it: i checked twice and more...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Under Browsing

It's in between

Enable page transitions

enable third-party browser extensions [requires restart]

Force offscreen compositing even under terminal server [requires restart]

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

thanks for helping

i found and tested it, but... no way

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Same problem here--is anyone NOT using Yahoo/SBC DSL and having this problem?  Oddly I'm using Yahoo/SBC but not any of their software; am using a router that connects directly via PPPoE.

Anyhow, have tried all suggestions here and am still looking for a fix. . . gif at rs51's link (http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/index.html) doesn't load, and that page fits the ISO encoding pattern that many posters seem to be addressing.  Any other suggestions?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have the problem and an *not* using Yahoo/SBC.  I have a cable modem, no special software from my provider. I tried your mysql link and the pictures didn't load. When I change the encoding to Western European (Windows) from Western European (ISO) it looks fine. I am not sure what to do. Am thinking of installing Netscape...
doylejm

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I'm not using Yahoo/SBC either and have often found certain pages with an annoying little red cross using IE but the mysql link did load the pictures for me.  Anyway, I use Opera too along with IE and Opera has no problems!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Man!

I had to reformat my computer, and I had the same problem.  No pics on web pages unless I manually selected the Western European (Windows) encoding on each page.  I'd never had this problem before.  Someone pointed me to this site, and I finally found the cause.  The connection manager of Yahoo DSL!

I did notice that when I reinstalled everything this last time that the connection manager was now on my computer and it hadn't been before, but I didn't know how to get rid of it.  I went down this post & tried everything mentioned until I came to spidey373's post on Oct. 2nd about disconnecting programs in msconfig.  Finally traced the problem to the Yahoo connection manager.  *%#@ Yahoo.  I should have known.  Doing this has helped solve other problems in the past.  I think I'm going to start to keep a notebook with problems & solutions.  Would make my life easier.  :- P

By the way, this is an awsome site.... or at least this post is.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

First I must say this forum is excellent.  I had gone through EVERY fix listed in this thread, but nothing worked UNTIL I read Xena1's post five minute ago.  Xena, when I originally had the SBC YAHOO Browser installed along with the connection manager, it appeared I had no problems.  When I uninstalled everything and left the manager, apparently that must have been the trouble as I removed it from msconfig start-up and voila, it is back to normal! I didn't connect the two because I had uninstalled a few other programs on my computer and had recently fixed a browser hijacking issue. Thank you for sharing that. Sad that I was running around addressing everything but the actual problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Yahoo Connection Manager might be the culprit for many, but unfortunately not for me--not using ANY of Yahoo's software, or an AV (which also seemed the problem for quite a few).  Anyone else in this kind of situation and still have the problem?  A test file is 60.jpg, left hand margin, of

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/index.html .

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Isn't the Connection manager needed software ? I only want to remove it if there's no harm in doing it . I'm so tired of this problem i've tried repairing IE and uninstalled and reinstalled the sbc/yahoo software but so far no luck.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have tried everything including in this tread, my situation still doesnt work! not all pages can load all the images but its mostly banners and ads of advertisement. If you go to luckysurf.com or pch.com or jackpot.com if you don't see any advertisement banners on slots or lotto pages then this is the problem Im having has well. What can I do to fixed this. I have no problem with the java and macromedia. I reinstall windows the other day, those sites were working great, I dunno everysince I updated my windows and remove windows messenger these pages has stop from showing it properly. Need help.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

shadow--to use Yahoo (or other DSL services I think) w/o extra software, just go to Network Connections (properties on My Network Places)->New connection wizard->connect to the internet->Set up manually->connect w/ broadband requiring user name & pwd.  Yahoo needs PPPoE, be sure to choose that option.  Then to connect, just create a shortcut to execute

%windir%\system32\rasphone.exe -d "DSL Connection"

where "DSL Connection" is whatever name you give the connection in Network Connection.  No software of any kind required (other than built in PPPoE in XP; older versions of Windows don't have this.)

zomby--sounds like a different problem; several are definitely out there.  The test file for my problem is 60.jpg at http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/index.html ; no other images load on any other pages after trying to download that one.  I was able to load everything on luckysurf.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I wonder what might be the cause of this weird thing happening with IE. I wonder if its because of...

1. Microsoft IE updates
2. RegPatch I applied to Tweak XP
3. Removing windows messenger
4. Detonator 52.16 drivers?
5. DirectX 9.0b ?

Im running the exact same somftware within my computer and my second computer....my second computer works, all pages is display properly. But on my main computer from updating everything is what makes it not appeared properly.

Only the advertisement and ads(slots machine) doesn't appeared, just not at all, I have no X image and I have no message poping with an error, its clean but image wont show.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

This is what Im getting:

Advertisement Blockers
There are various ways you can do this already, and it will probably possible to write a Mozilla plugin to do this. However, this proposal is very badly thought out as it will reduce the revenues that web sites get from advertising, which keep the majority of the web free of charge. Hence it is unlikely this will every appear in Mozilla or Communicator.
This may eventually appear indirectly however, since things such as preventing popup windows and having preferences differ on a site-by-site basis can achieve this (these are above).

How can I fixed this? I cannot find what type of plugin is install that causes this, I already empty all my cachec and stuff, still no image appears!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

This is weird I install the Opera broswer to see if it works with a different browser and still it doesnt work, every website that contains advertisement banners or ads is not showing....strange cause I have absolutly no spyware or adware blockers.?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

never mind folks! I just found my problem stupid! Its the first time Im using the norton antispam I though it was just to control the spams on my email box but its not, theres an adblocking feature that exist, all this time it was my software....grrrrr but now my only problem is when I load my windows the cpu usage stays at 100% and it my system is running poorly, the only way to stop it is by opening the task manager and cpu drops to 0% and system works great again.....but if I reboot the system does the same thing again....something is making the cpu load at 100% for nothing, any suggestion?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

i just installed latest ms ie6 patch and now i cansee the mysql page!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Same here; looks like the noble souls at MS have fixed one of the causes of this type of problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

the saga continues. I tried the IE 6 updates and it didn't help. One new twist is that when I launch the program Adaptec Easy CD creator 4, I get several boxes with X's...and this program is independent of IE 6, isn't it? I can sort of feel my way through the first 2 dialog boxes for this program and then it works as usual. does this tell anyone anything about what the problem may be? in the meantime i have switched to using netscape, but i would like to fix this problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I vote for the November, 2003 Cumulative Security Hotfix for IE.  It resolved the .gif .jpg and other issues with difficulties displaying images on certain pages.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

that is what i did: the November 2003, Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (824145)and it didn't help.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Everyone, there is actually a very easy way to fix the problem described as images not being displayed / loaded within IE6 and being replaced with red crosses.  This problem does not affect all web sites and it can be temporarily fixed on a site by site basis by selecting a different encoding or by de-selecting and then selecting 'Auto-Select'.

However if like most people you want a permanent fix ensure the following registry keys all exist.(I have only tested this in Windows 2000)

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I believe I have found the solution to the encoding problem
of the red X's.

Go to System Info under system maintenance and open system
file checker under tools. Use the extract option to replace
"mlang.dll" from cabs or Win98 installation disk.

So far, this has solved the problem.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

What worked for me in correcting the display problem was the following:

Check that you have "MICROSOFT VM" listed in the ADVANCED section of INTERNET PROPERTIES.

On one of my machines that both have IE6, Win XP and all updates this was not present.

I found the download at:
http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

Also on this page was a very interesting explanation as to why there is no help from Microsoft with this matter. (Well worth as read).

After installing the VM, my browser is working perfectly. I have however niticed that the two dll files are not on either of my machines.

It would be nice to know if the above works for anybody else as I think that these missing dll files may not matter.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

mradgg , i'm trying to open that link you posted but it won't open :/...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

There seems to be a problem with that website at the moment. One of the direct download links is:
http://apycom.balthost.info/download/msjavx86.exe This link works with my DAP at present.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

my problem was also fixxed using the hot tip jammiebassnett explained in his thread...for me it was kazaa lite and i wanted to thank jamie for letting me know this...if you have kazaa and your images are red x's instead of pics i incourage you to try this..ive tried everything and this finally worked...thanks again for your professional help

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hi folks,

New to the forum but from what I see, this looks like a great place for computer questions. I have read this thread a few times and tried many of the tricks. The one fix that seemed to fix my intermittant, red X graphic problem was uninstalling Norton Spam Blocker. I had a trial version so uninstalling it was no big deal. Too bad as I get a lot of Spam. I guess I will have to rely on Outlook's own Spam blocker.

Just as more FYI. I tried switching the encoding to "auto-select" which fixed the red X graphic on some sites but not all. The uninstalling Norton Spam Blocker seems to have been the real fix.

Good luck if you are still searching. Bill

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I guess there is no edit feature to posts on this forum???

Anyway, I did want to add that I have also installed the Microsoft Virtual Machine. So in total, I have done 3 things:

1. Change encoding to auto
2. Uninstall Norton SpamBlocker
3. Install Microsoft VM.

Thanks, Bill

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hello everyone.

I'm new to this forum but i've also had the problem with the red X's. I tried many things of course to get rid of those, and finally i managed to solve the problem. I had 2 Norton products installed, the Antivirus and Internet Security. Uninstalling NIS didn't do any good, so by pure chance i also uninstalled NAV. Voila, red X gone. I installed NAV over again and the images were still there. So NIS seems to be the sinner in this case.

I'm sure this won't work for everyone, but I hope at least some of you will be able to get results.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

i was getting red x's alot, using IE 6.0.28, with Windows 98 SE.  I tried a bunch of the solutions in this long thread, but what (finally) just worked for me was installing the latest Java virtual machine.  1.4.2_03 is the version, i believe.  and voila, finally, no red x's.....

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

As more and more websites now use flash and shockwave to display their graphics, it is worth noting that if you have not updated flash player and shockwave to the latest versions (or possibly they are not even installed on your system), then on some sites you will get the dreaded "red x"!!

If you have an older version of flash and shockwave then this could cause the behaviour whereby sometimes when you go to certain websites only, the graphics will load sometimes and other times they wont, or the page wont load at all or you may appear to receive a DNS error!

Go here http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ and download the latest free players, reboot your system and then try those "red x" websites again, worth a try!!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I JUST FIXED IT.

I am running Windows 98, reinstalled and reinstalled again, and IE6 repaired and re-repaired...all b/c of this situation. This old Dell desktop ran just perfectly with Earthlink dialup for years and I only began having this red x/Windows ISO/no pics/banner ads problem when I recently installed SBC Yahoo! DSL. I have been going insane since. Thank God I found this site.

I followed a few tips above to not avail (restarting after each). Finally, I followed two of the tips and restarted, so I don't know if it was one of them or both.

FIRST TIP:

See: JacksonVFR (TechnicalUser) Oct 2, 2003
I deselected:
Adaware Bootup
BJCFD
YBrowser (I bet this is the real culprit)
tgcmdprovidersbc
Connection Manager

SECOND TIP:

See: craziman (TechnicalUser) Oct 23, 2003
and
craziman (TechnicalUser) Oct 24, 2003
unchecking "enable third party browser extensions"  in Tools ->Internet Options -> Advanced

Hopefully, this is the end of this damned road. Good luck.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Wow.  Here I return to this thread 3/4 of a year later and still with no solution.

I have to state something strange that occured with me however that leads us closer to the solution, but also just increases the confusion.

I still have SBC Yahoo DSL service and still use all the same software from that disk.  A few weeks ago I reformatted and reinstalled everything.  This time, something bizzare happened: my pages that I frequently visit where I get the red x's loaded PERFECTLY!! (here's the letdown)... until I restarted and signed on later that night.  Then I was back to having to right click and choose Western European (Windows) again.

So, it is surely some additional software that caused this problem.  Can somebody who's savvy on this maybe narrow it down.  Could it be a registry file?  What should I look into?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Alright, one more message here.  From the beginning of trying to understand this problem more technically, I was convinced that it had to do with the .nls registry files, since many of us have to switch Western European (ISO) over to Western European (Windows) to get it to work.  However, I'm not so savvy on all this.  I'll just post a bit of info and then my .nls file list and maybe somebody can spot a problem.

Ok, I'm using Windows 98 and IE 6.  Here's my registry (look at the bottom, I think I see a problem).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Codepage]

"1251"="cp_1251.nls"

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

TRY THIS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brand new install of my OS and I have had errors on pages I visit. And thought it was a jscript problem, But turns out it was an encoding problem with the western european(windows). Well I decided to try something I have not been able to find on any post. And it WORKED.. I am running WinXP home with a wireless modem. And And IE6. Try this and let me know....
try this.
1. load up msn.com
2. under view change your encoding to western (windows)
3. minimize page then go to internet properties and delete all cookies and delete files including all offline content.
4. go to settings and set your offline content to 1mb. exit out.
5. close IE and start back up.
This is what worked for me..

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

(OP)
hi...  i actually started all this last summer, and to report:  i have still not found a fix.

i have switched the users to Mozilla Firefox (as of late), and again (*as with Opera*) there is no problem with the red x's...

keep trying!!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hi all,

I have put up with the (seemingly random) curse of the little red crosses for a while - attempting various 'fixes'(all to no avail), but not too concerned because it had never seriously inconvenienced me.

Now I am in the process of learning Dreamweaver ..... and there they are again! When I F12 to check my work in IE the images are all replaced by the dreaded red crosses. I have tried various image formats - jpeg, bmp, gif - all the same.

Since finding this excellent site I have: updated everything suggested; checked and unchecked the various permutations; altered, turned off and modified all my protections; reinstalled, uninstalled, clean installed; sworn at, threatened and even begged the little people of the h/d (well, you never know!) ..... nada, zilch, no change.

My next step (if I manage to refrain from throwing the 'puter out of the window) will be to format C:, do yet another clean install of my Win 98SE, ISP and browser and then (if the red crosses are absent) check after every new program that I add.

Assuming that I still have: a PC, my sanity, the will to live etc., after this exercise, I will post any results here

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

RamonVegas...

that's going to take some time...  but if you're game for it, i'd suggest making an image after every install.  that way, you not only know which one screwed the pooch, but also, you have a pristine copy of the OS to reload in a hurry if they re-appear on their own later...

ymmv...

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Okay everybody.  I have had this problem for MONTHS.  It finally got fixed today!  I have Windows 98 and was using SBC Yahoo DSL and only got the dreaded red x's.  I finally was able to speak to a support person who knew the problem.  They simply switched my IE back to version 5.5 and now all is fixed.  She mentioned this is a big problem for those with Windows 98 on SBC Yahoo DSL and they only suggest IE 5.5 with this combination.  I hope that helps someone.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Lori444

I have not tried this suggestion, but I would definitly like to.  I can't seem to find IE version 5.5 anywhere available to download.  If it's not too much trouble could you post the link where you found your version?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Well, after "installing" it I can't seem to get IE 6 deleted to get IE 5.5 to take its place.

That's ok, I've had my own idea as to how to fix this for a while now and am going to reformat as soon as I get done typing this post.  I will report back here tonight or later on tomorrow to reveal details.  HOPEFULLY my idea will work and I will finally have found a fix after being plauged with this problem for nearly an entire year.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Well, I was just wasting my time with that!  My bright idea was to extract my registry periodically and to use the last batch of it before the problem arose.  It didn't work at all, but I must admit that I'm not as savvy as most people on problems like this, so it was just a shot in the dark, really.

I did find again, however, that directly after install, YET before my next restart, pictures load fine on all sites.  After my next restart though, it's back to "normal".  I typed "msconfig" in the run window and went to "startup" and did notice that after my restart "Yahoo! Pager" has been added.  In fact now that I check again, it's added twice.  *shrugs*.  I think maybe it's the culprit.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have had the same problem now for some time too, long nights trying to figure it out why a great deal of pages would load without gifs, until I finally found it. I have Kazaa Lite installed on my windows XP Pro, Kazaa Lite makes a file called "HOSTS" and it puts it in C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. It lists loads and loads of pages that it blocks. Here is part of the file on my machine:

..........................  The list is increadible long.

The only thing I did was delete from these 2 files the pages that I wanted and they loaded correctly with all gifs included. I dont know if anyone has tried this, I certainly have tried everthing else, until I tried this.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Okay, I researched this encoding problem very thoroughly and I think I found a definite answer in my case. A program called cmanager.exe was running at startup (from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). This program is called Connection Manager and is used, in this case, by SBC DSL. I removed it from registry and the problem was fixed. I put it back in the registry as a troubleshooting method and the problem returned.

To use cmanager.exe anyway I found a workaround. Since stuff in the registry Run key runs very early in the boot process I think this is why cmanager.exe is interfering with the encoding in IE. I created a shortcut to cmanager.exe on the desktop and opened it after the computer was up and running and it didn't seem to cause any problems.

All this was tested on a Windows 98SE computer with Internet Explorer 6 all the critical Windows updates installed.

Hope this helps.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Still no fix for me, but I may be getting a new computer soon with Windows XP (I'm still stuck on '98).  Maybe with a new operating system this problem will dissapear.

I'm posting basically to bump this thread back up for those who have the similar problems so that they can view it and for those who may have more suggestions to add to the thread.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I was faced with this same problem after I re-installed ZoneAlarm a while ago. When I viewed the source code for one of the pages that I couldn't view the graphics on, I showed that ZoneAlarm's Popup Blocker was stopping the graphics.
So, turned off ZA and... no change! Uninstalled ZA and... result!! Will need to try a different firewall, but am using Win XP's own (although it's not the best out there  -roll on SP2!) and all is working again.

Try it, you nay be lucky.

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

This is quite a large thread, and I have posts dating back pretty far in this, so let me re-state a few things.

I am running Windows 98 first edition with SBC Yahoo DSL software and something within it is the culprit to my problem of no images showing up on select pages. (Probably one of the many useless yahoo affiliated programs installed, which I immediately uninstall!)

Anyways, I tried fixing it many times on many occasions, taking many suggestions in this thread. I fixed it an easy way! I just recently borrowed my brother-in-law's computer, because he was interested in selling it to me. I installed my exact same disk of internet software on it and the problem is nonexistant!

So what's the difference? He had Windows 98 Second edition installed, while I was stuck on the primary version. If some of you with this SBC Yahoo DSL problem are using first edition 98, get a copy of second edition off of somebody next time you reformat if it's worth it to you. I realize this applies to a rather small portion of people, but hey, I finally found my way and I'm glad!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I have never posted to this forum before.  I found it through Google.  This problem has been bugging me for three months.  I had tried EVERYTHING to fix it, even switching to Mozilla Firefox!

User jamiebassnett:  YOU ARE AWESOME!  The hosts file was my problem.  In fact, I now recall that the problem started soon after I installed Kazaa-lite.  I deleted all of the extraneous crap in the hosts file, and reverted to a previous copy (luckily it had been copied as Hosts.BAK).

This solved my problem.

I have no idea who you are but THANK YOU.  May good karma rain down upon you, etc...

A very happy user.  username: jamiebassnettROX

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hello  Everyone,
I have read just about all the posts on this thread and still cannot find the answer to why some jpegs are not displaying on my website.  The images are simply not there, no red x , just empty space.  I checked view-source and in the source code IE6 removed the jpeg in my code!!!  On machines that do display the jpegs, the source code has the jpeg in it.  How weird is that!?

Anyone?

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Wanted to add my findings here in hopes of helping others with this annoying problem.  I tried just about everything in this thread short of reinstalling XP trying to solve the intermittent missing graphic problems and stumbled across the solution on another site.  Here is the article that describes the solution:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312496

I was using a download manager called "Download Express" which created the Name-Space Handler keys mentioned in the article, once I uninstalled it the problem went away.  A user on a different site was using a different download manager called GetRight and was also able to resolve it by uninstalling the program.

Hope this info helps someone!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

I had the, dreaded "red-x", or IE encoding problem where IE keeps going back to Western European (ISO) all on its own, no matter how many times you set it back to normal, it keeps reverting back to something other than Western European (Windows).

I have traveled the net far and wide, even followed a forum on the MCSE site that went on for over 6 months with this problem to no avail.

Microsoft seems to know nothing of the problem, and offers no solution to it.

My heart goes out to the many people who suffer this same, more than annoying problem. Those same people who keep getting poor advice, such as use AD-AWARE, use SPYBOT, try an AntiVirus, reinstall this, delete that, copy this, do a complete reinstall.

I have tried all those, ...and more.

Then you get those that post, here try this, it worked for me. And, you go and try it, and it doesnt work.

Short of a complete reinstall of Windows, it seems futile.

Well, today, in one last ditch effort before commiting to a full reinstall, I checked one last thing.

Everyone kept saying to check in the following registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage and make sure that c_28591.nls was listed, and when people checked there, and saw that it was, people were stumped.

Now as in my case, yes, c_28591.nls was in fact listed at that registry location, HOWEVER, that actual file, c_28591.nls, did not exist on my hard drive anywhere.

So, first thing, I put the XP disk in the drive, clicked Start, then Run, then typed in CMD and hit OK. Got my black command line window. From there I typed the following:
expand d:\i386\C_28591.NL_ c:\windows\system32\C_28591.NLS
...and then hit the Enter key.

Next, do a reboot.

When "my" machine came back up, the problem was solved. Talk about letting out a loud scream.

You see, my problem was not in the registry entry, but in the fact that, that file wasnt even on my system. Now, other peoples problem might be that they dont even have it in the registry entry. In which case they will need to first enter the correct entries at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage, and then possibly need to do what I just described to get the file on their system, but they may already have the file on their system, and merely need to correct their registry entry.

I beleive a gentleman a few posts above mine, posted the entire fixed registry key that you could save to a text file and rename the extension to ".REG".

Either way, your problem is hopefully going to be one of the following:

WRE=Wrong Registry Entry
CRE=Correct Registry Entry
FNH=File is Not on your Hard drive
FIH=File IS on your Hard drive

1. CRE + FNH (My Scenario)
2. WRE + FNH
3. WRE + FIH

Still may not work for some of you, although I dont see how, but, never say never, especially with computers!

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Hello all, i have got windows xp and have had a strange problem where by certain advertisements and banners do not appear when using ie6, there seems to be 2 diffrent types of problems in this forum, one being that pictures do not show on all/or certain webpages and one where by certain advertisements and banners do not appear which is the problem that i used to have, i resolved this by going into C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and renaming the HOSTS file to hosts.old as soon as i did this i went to web page that i'd had problems with and vola fine. (if you are using zone alarm then shut it down as well, as this blocks certain adds and banners as well)

RE: IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only

Here comes a different slant on the problem. I am using IE6 and Windows 2000.

I have posted a web page up to our server, when this page is downloaded to a client machine one of the images and the associated link in missing from the page, if I download to a different client it works ok. I don't get the little red x, I don't get anything appearing where the image and link should be and if I mouseover I don't get a change to the mousepointer.

Even stranger, when I view the source through the browser on the client machines I get one version which has the image line of code in it and one which doesn't. It would appear that somehow the line of code which references the image and the link is being removed when it hits the client mcahine.
