Newbie Question...Server requirements

HELP!!! We are planning/budgeting to implement Unicenter TNG and I want to ask all experts to give me their recommended server specs.

250 Users medium-size company
15 Win2K Servers (6 servers dedicated to PeopleSoft ERP)
18 Branch sites all around the US 128KbpsCIR/256Kbps frame relay
2 Branch sites T1 PTP connection

We plan to implement one server for Network & Server Monitoring, Batch Processing for PeopleSoft, and Security.  We have not decided whether to monitor workstations.
Thanks to all...

RE: Newbie Question...Server requirements

Hi

I think that a Dual Processor 2,0 GHZ with 2
Gygabytes RAM Memory and a raid 5 system is enough.
I have a DELL Power Edge 4600 Pentium 3 with 2 Processors 1,8 GHZ using the Intel's Hyper Threading Tecnology which improves the server performance. This server has 2 Gbyte RAM a a SCSI Controller called Perc3/DI.
This is for only Unicenter 3.0 NSM or Unicenter TNG with Agent Techology Mananger (known as DSM) World View, Enterprise Monitoring, Workload Manager and Performance manager. That's all.
I need know what you want monitor in you branch offices because it is agood idea install a remote DSM in your offices monitoring the local subnets and forwarding the events to a central DSM at your local office.
Planning your enviroment is very more easy to choose you server.
But keep in mind when you installing the server if your enviroment is Windows you need to plan how SQL work.
SQL is a central point of performance issues so it needs attention.
If you have knowledment in Unicenter NSM you know how its act.
Remember if you plan monitor Frame Relay Links you need the Frame Relay Option(FRO) that can be bought separately.
First plan what do you need, such as routers monitoring availability, if you need to monitor routers performance you need Response Manager Option (known as performance management option). There is a performance manager in Unicenter 3.0 called NSM and Unicenter 2.X called TNG but this performance manager is for devices with performance agents installed.
I'm very interested to help you but I need know more specifically you enviroment.
Do you have any skills with CA Unicenter products ???

If you have any questions or doubts don't hesitate to call me.
Starting the enterprise monitoring is a little bit confused, so planning, its turning on a BIG PLEASURE.
You will take control of your networks entirely.
Best regards

RE: Newbie Question...Server requirements

I'm just a newbie so I'm just starting to learn Unicenter.

We will monitor the ff:
20 Nortel Routers
18 Frame Relay Connections
2 T1 connections
1 Cisco Catalyst 5505 Core Switch
4 Cisco Catalyst 2900XL Switches
18 Nortel 10/100 Hubs
10 Netgear 10/100 Switches
6 PeopleSoft ERP Win2K servers (SQL 2000, Weblogic, & Apps servers etc.) - We need also to control 800 batch processes submitted every night.
1 Exchange 2000 Server
2 Win2K AD Domain Controllers with WINS & DHCP
5 Win2K Member Servers
70 Miscellaneous HP Printers
250 Mixed Notebook & Desktop computers (Maybe???)

A CA Consultant recommends the ff:
Enterprise Layer ServersUnicenter 3.0 – NSM (Network Server)
Dual Intel PIII 750 MHz or a single >1GHz CPU
512 Meg – 1 GIG RAM (use 1GB+ if multiple components on one box)
20 GIG Hard drive
100 MB Ethernet Connection
NT Compatible DLT Drive or other backup mechanism

So my colleague went ahead and order a DL360 G2 single-1.4GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM and mirrored 36GB yesterday.

The server was just delivered today.  Should we return it?

RE: Newbie Question...Server requirements

That should be adequate. We use 2 DL360's with 2 Intel PII 800Mhz and 1/2 Gb ram in each, and this is enough.
Unicenter 3.0 does need a little more but not significantly.
