Boot Problem

Boot Problem

Boot Problem

I'm just installing Mandrake 6.0 on a fresh disk, and everything looks okay in the install, but when I reboot from the hard drive I get a GPF. The LILO starts, and a number of functions are successful (calibrating delay loop, checking memory, etc.).

Finally, it gets to a line that says ;

mtrr : v1.34 (19990310) Richard Gooch (rgooch@atnf.csiro.au)

then the next lines are :

general protection fault : 0000
CPU : 0
EIP : 0010:[<c01065dd>]
EFLAGS : 00010293

then comes a register dump.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

RE: Boot Problem

Hmmm....can you just boot from CD with a line similar to:
vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 load_ramdisk=0 initrd=
when it asks for boot parameters? (this should @ least get you through the rest of the installation & running pretty smoothly for a little while.....wouldn't suggest it as a permanent fix though.

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :-)

RE: Boot Problem

mtrr stands for memory type range registers and this is trying to be turned on, trouble is your system might not support it proply. Have you made a kernel and compiled this in? because you make a new kernel and turn it off.
Or the next problem is that it is loading someting after that and that it's the device after that's the problem.
