Sidekick 99 - Can't Install on Second Operating System on Same Machine

Sidekick 99 - Can't Install on Second Operating System on Same Machine

(OP)
I have SK99 installed on Win 98 on a desktop. The machine runs Win 2000 Pro on a different partition.
SK99 installed / works OK in 98 but when trying to install under W2K, the installation algorithm stops and says "Can't find 'cityinfo.dat' (although it's there to be seen). "Restart your computer"

Trawling through registry in regedt32 finds nothing.

In short, after messing about for ages, have failed to be able to install SK99 under the second operating system.

Anyone with a bright solution please ??

Dear Bob,
Please see
FAQ807-2337
The link for the Starfish site there may have gaps in it so select it all and check for gaps in Notepad or some other text editor.

Hello Jim

I am very grateful to you for a successful outcome to this
annoying problem. One of your tips was to rename the file "Wininit.ini" and then to re-install. This worked like a charm and SK99 thereafter happily installed in W2K and in XPPro although both o/s populating the same machine. This proved good on desktop and laptop. I wondered how you came to this rather unlikely fix .. MS Knowledge base or just serendipity? It's not the sort of fix one simply stumbles onto!
Anyway - thanks again.

Bob

Dear Bob,
I would dearly like to lay claim to serendipity, it sounds so pure and accidental (I particularly like the sagacity).

viz:(that quality which, through good fortune & sagacity, allows a person to discover something good while seeking something else),

The truth however is more mundane; someone at Starfish worked it out and I am just repeating their solution!

Hi !
I have been using sk95,97,98,99. Then I learned SK-time is over but ... not true as there is truesync desktop! Any Motorola Mobile Phone has CD with truesync desktop included which is nothing else but SK99. I found somebody who did not use the CD! So I use truesnyc desktop on windows XP professionell, no problems, as I regularly update via Start/Programs/Starfish Update.
Save your USERDATA and TEMPLATES, No problems. Truesync takes your SK folders. I also sync my palm M515 perfectly. You update your truesync desktop perfectly for anything you want. Just check what you need.
Unfortunately truesync is not SK 97, only SK99. So users of earlier and much more convenient versions might be disappointed as SK99 is :((  compared to SK 97 ;))) in my opinion. Note the paperclip right top corner in contact view:
"The Contact Log pane displays below the current card. Use this pane to view and edit Contact Log information; click the paperclip icon at the right of the Index line to open and close the Contact Log."
This log only shows my mail merge letters + time stamp. I do not get the calendar etc. :(( . So truesync desktop is the latest SK99 but perfectly serviced.
Re installing note the sequence what the other guys told. Palm - Truesync etc.
I start now using palm 4.01 plus the new "Agenda for windows" which is nothing but the very new windows desktop for "action names" whose name revcently changed to "agenda" (a for me perfect Palm OS time planer and PIM), see www.iambic.com. It´s all I need. The windows desktop version I use with Palm desktop but it also greatly enhances Outlook XP or the like. I run my business with this.
Have fun!!

Thanks Willfried,
It's nice to know that SDK99 still exists in the clothing (Almost) of Truesync.
It's a shame about the lack of Calendar as it makes you use 2 Programs instead of one.

I don't suppose you can drag a Card in Truesync to "Agenda for windows" (or as it now is "Agenda") and have it fill in a  persons name for a particular time slot?

If you don't mind, could I quote your post in a FAQ (or if you prefer, you write it as a FAQ) as it gives everyone another option?

Regards Jim
