Using Pathfinder Palette

I'm trying to modify text converted to outlines using the pathfinder commands under the effect menu, specifically exclude. I put another shape over half of the text converted to outline shape and followed the instructions in the manual, nothing. I tried using both types of selection arrows to select, switched which shape I selected first and second and still... nothing happens! Any ideas?

make each block of type a compound path (ctrl+8) before applying the pathfinder. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
