Does anyone have any advice as to how to create a Sliding Scale formula in Excel?

For instance: the formula would be placed in C1 and apply a percentage to A1 based on the size of the value in B1. If B1 is less than 5, then 90%, less than 4, then 80%, less than 3, then 70%.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi,

For starters you might like to try this in C1:

=IF(B1<3,A1*.7,IF(B1<4,A1*.8,If(B1<5,A1*.9,A1)))

It seems to work for me, also providing 100% of A1 where B1 is not less that 5. You might also note that it is the reverse order you specified it, as you need to catch the lowest values first. I am presuming you mean "less than 5 and not less than 4", "less than 4 and not less than 3", "less than 3".

You might need to look for a more sophisticated solution if you have many more levels to check for.

Good Luck!

Thanks very much for the formula, Peter. I was having a bit of a "gray-out" with my problem-solving last night.

I appreciate your time and support of Tek Tips!

(Surf's Up!)

Hi Bob,

Pssssssssssssssst. (I hope you can hear me over that wonderful sound of the surf !) :)

I know you've been VERY responsive with your awarding STARS in the past, so I know this was an "oversight". Your sight was probably obscured by having one eye on that surf ! ;-)

Best Regards, ...Dale

Greetings, Dale,

No oversight on my part; my problem is that I cannot award stars from home off of this computer. Perhaps I should address this to the forum: Do you think it is because of the new software I have put on this computer? It is called, "AdSubtract" and it blocks ads, banners, popups.

What do you think, Dale?

Very Best Regards,

Bob

Hi Bob,

My apologies... I really should have known, because you had mentioned a problem before, just not the specifics.

It IS an interesting problem, and YES, I agree that you should try a separate posting on Tek-Tips. The only question is "which" forum would be the best.

It might have been a while since you last picked your forums, so in case this will help...

1) On the top-left-corner of the Tek-Tips screen, click “Subscribe to Forums”.

2) The next screen will have: Areas, with Categories for each Area.

Under Areas ...DeskTop Systems, there’s “Desktop Software”. After selecting this, on the right side under Categories you’ll see “Personal Information Managers”.

Another possibility... Areas: MIS/IT - Category: Security Solutions.

I hope this helps. “Good Hunting” :)

Best Regards, ...Dale

Thanks, Dale. I will give this a try when a have a few spare moments.

Your advice is always appreciated, and it is always good to hear from you.

I hope your week is pleasant.
