problems creating a table

I am getting an error 1064 every time I try to create a table. I am new to MYSQL but have used oracle quite a bit. I've read thru the manual and don't think I have the syntax wrong but nevertheless it won't seem to work. I must have a setup problem or something. I am typing:

create table table_name (column varcharXX);

shouldn't this work?

RE: problems creating a table

You should be doing:

create table my_table (my_column varchar(40));

You've only left out the parenthesis.
