Looking for other MIMS users to discuss barcoding issues.

RE: Barcode

We are just looking at bar coding solutions.  We have 4 operating districts with a total of 11 warehouses. We would start with cycle counting but want to move into receiving and issuing.  Other areas may also be of interest such as Maintenancew for work orders and HR for employees.

We are using bar coding for receiving, issues, and cycle counts. I can connect you with our support people or try to answer any questions.
We have not been satisfied with the support we have received. This is why I am looking for other MIMS users who are currently using bar coding along with MIMS.

RE: Barcode

Hi,

We are using bar coding for maintenance inspection, but the Interface we have is very simple. There is read access, from a Web front end, to Oracle for validation and extraction of Equipment numbers that are loaded onto the bar code readers, after inspection, (and completion of the check list on the reader) the relevant non-conforming info. is downloaded to a server where MIMS  (via an hourly script) would read the info,  create work orders and send created and rejected info. back to the server.
As I said very simple.

RE: Barcode

Mincom has a new product out called Output Designer.  Basically, it uses RDLs to output data in XML format.  The XML document is picked up by a process running under Windows NT and merged into a prewritten MS Word template.  We are using it to print our POs at the moment but we have plans for using it to print bar codes.  Mincom wrote this product for Shell.  We are only the second place to get it.  There have been some set-up problems with it but it's finally running.  Theoretically, it should be a cool tool.  Sometime over the next month, I'll be using it to do some barcoding and will know more then.  I was lucky enough to visit the Mincom headquarters in Brisbane, Australia last month.  I was trained in rdl by Nel Kanas, the Mincom barcoding guru.  It was great!

RE: Barcode

G'day.
I have written 6 barcode printing programs for the 'BARCODE BLASTER' system: StockCode, CostCentre, Employee, WorkOrder, BinningLabels, DirectChargeBinningLabels.
The client had a problem with these thermal labels fading in sunlight for their stock items, so they also bought a ribbon printer, 'Intermec', which meant writing another program as different brands obviously use different code.
These tasks were not difficult. The barcode programming manuals are available on the internet, and it was just a matter of embedding their code within a parameter-driven MIMS RDL and writing the labels out as a file for the barcode package to translate.
TIP: spaces and controlchars are critical.
An associate, Tony Soon, wrote a COBOL program to read the barcodes. Pleased to offer any more help if needed..  Nel.

RE: Barcode

This may be a good topic for either a System Stream Workshop or for special coverage at the Mims User Conference (October 2001 - Tampa Fl.)

If there is enough interest, I'm sure my boss would be willing to sponsor a special workshop (meeting space, food, projectors, etc.), and if we hold it in Denver, it should be easy to get Mincom to participate.

I am setting up a System Stream Workshop in June, 2001 that we could devote some time to this as well.  If we have, say, 5 companies that would participate I think we could make it fly one way or the other.

RE: Barcode

I am curious to know more about the output designer mentioned.
I have been involed with succesfull projects before for output and reporting on MIMS data.

Where can I get information?
