Analog Station Module Recognition

Does anyone know what the term "analog station module recognition" means?  I'm looking at a norstar document that compares MICS software features, and MICS release 3.0 and higher says it supports analog station module recognition, but I'm not sure what this is.

  There are two flavors of analog station module. One with msg waiting and one without. One might suppose the software wasn't developed for these modules until after a certain release. So a stn module may not work on R1T1 but would on 4.x. Certainly the MSG waiting feature is more than just analog conversion.
