Replacing the shell with a GUI

Replacing the shell with a GUI

Replacing the shell with a GUI

To cut a long story short, Im trying to re-invent the spreadsheet. The user (for whom a regular spreadsheet is probably too difficult) would click about drawing pictures of the functions that something (maybe Erlang) has to lazily evaluate. Id like to use Java to write the UI, but that doesnt have to be the case.

Can I just call a function through the Java or C interface that does the same thing as telling the shell to lay on a new function, or forget an existing one? How would I then store what the user just set up? Or should I be using a completely different language, like forth?

Thanks in advance, if theres anybody out there.
