Inner and Outer Joins In Oracle

Can someone tell me the difference between an inner join and an outer join? Also if you have any good references or web sites where they have info about SQL Statements please let me know .
Thanks

RE: Inner and Outer Joins In Oracle

Select empname, deptname
From emp, dept
Where emp.deptno = dept.deptno

That's an inner join - nothing wrong with it - but if there's a null emp.deptno the query will skip that record altogether.

Select empname, deptname
From emp, dept
Where emp.deptno = dept.deptno (+)

That's an outer join, will return blank deptname for emp recs with a null emp.deptno
