Serious Color Problems Placing Photoshop Images

I just installed and started using Photoshop and Illustrator on my PC (but I've been using both apps on my Mac for years). Photoshop seems to be running fine, but for some reason, whenever I "Place" a MULTI-LAYER Photoshop document into Illustrator, or open a MULTI-LAYER Photoshop document from Illustrator, the majority of the colors in the original document disappear! Only a few bright highlights remain, but even they are in the wrong color, such as a bright neon blue or intense yellow.

This only happens with MULTI-LAYER Photoshop documents. I can "Open" or "Place" TRUE (i.e. not flattened) single-layer Photoshop documents, JPEGs or GIFs without any color-related problems.

I can also create colored vector graphics without any problems in Illustrator. And the Photoshop documents in question obviously open without any color-related problems in Photoshop itself.

I know what you're thinking.... "flatten" the MULTI-LAYER Photoshop document before "Placing" it or "Opening" it in Illustrator. In some cases, not all though, that method does actually work. But I shouldn't have to do that. I've never had to do that before on my Mac using the same exact images. And flattening the images only works 60% of the time. For some reason, it doesn't work with certain multi-layered documents.

I'm using Windows 2000 and running Illustrator 9.0 and Photoshop 6.0. The problem isn't with the documents because, like I said, I can open them fine in Illustrator 9.0 on my Mac. The problem seems to be with my copy of Illustrator for PC... if I could only figure out how to fix it!

Please help!

one make sure both AI and PS are using the same color settings. Check your PS docs for 'extra' channels, they can cause weird stuff to happen. Check adobe.com for patches for both apps. get the Win2k service pak 2 from windows.com and stay on that Mac as much as possible. BEHOLD!
