Can SMTP Be Migrated From 2008 R2 to 2019?

(OP)
My organization's smtp server is still running on 2008 R2. I am going to build a 2019 server to replace it but I am having trouble finding out how to migrate the configuration from the 2008 server to the 2019 server. Does the community have any ideas or links on how I can migrate the smtp configuration?

OR, can I do an in-place upgrade to 2012 R2 without causing any issues with SMTP?
