Notifications?

(OP)
I'm setting up network monitoring, and I thought "Hey, I'd like to put my notification area on my computer to good use, by popping up a message if I have an issue (as well as generating an email, etc.)

So... here's a question... how can I send a message from a server to my local machine and have it show up as a notification? I find lots of posts on how to turn off notifications, but I actually *WANT* to send a notification to my machine from my monitoring software.

Any thoughts on this? TIA!

Or do they call that the "Action center" now?

You know, the little callout at the lower-right of my screen... where email notifications and such would go.

RE: Notifications?

Use a Rule to force a "Display mail from someone in the New Item Alert Window" and make sure you have alerts enabled. That should do it. Just put whatever email address the server will be using to send to you in the Rule.

Not quite as simple as you might hope …

or even

If you really do want Toasts, then you might want to have a look at the BurntToast, which is a PowerShell Module for displaying Toast notifications. This can then be invoked remotely via Powershell, something like:

Invoke-Command -ComputerName RemotePC -Credential UserName -ScriptBlock {Toast -Text 'Test'}

Or there's what appears to be quite a neat solution that uses an HTTP listener (still needs BurntToast):

If you just want a simple popup, check out the 'msg' function available from the commandline

It can never be simple, can it? Oh well... email / text notifications it is. :)
