Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

(OP)
I want to upgrade our IPO 500v2 Control Unit from R10.0 to R10.1 (10.0.0.2 ==> R10.1.0.5).

Voicemail Pro is hosted on an external esxi server.

Does the upgrade sequence make a difference? I wasn't sure whether I should upgrade our control unit before or after our VoiceMail Pro server.

Thanks for any suggestions. I couldn't find any official Avaya documents on this topic.

RE: Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

Does not really matter. I usually start the IPO upgrade then while that is running I do the VM pro. The only time it matters I have seen is with the UC Module.

RE: Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

IP Office is where upgrade issues are more likely to occur, that's the one to get done and resolved first. Voicemail Pro is pretty safe* and the methods by which the IP Office talks to the Voicemail Pro rarely changes. So shame to do the voicemail first, then find you have problems with the IP Office which mean you need to roll it back and then roll back the voicemail too.

*Pretty safe because sadly I think its doesn't get the product management love it should from Avaya for what is a very good product. Lack of new features mean that Version Y of Voicemail Pro is largely just Version X with the version number changed.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Thanks for the replies! This is all good info.

Any idea how much time these updates take to install?

I am estimating 2-4 hours of downtime for the upgrade in order to allow for troubleshooting, but will schedule this on a day when most people are gone in case it goes longer.

RE: Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

upgrade anywhere from 2-3 hours but actual downtime might be closer to 15 minutes.

If you do the phone firmware update before updating the IPO...

Derfloh,

Just confirming what you wrote. . .

I should update the phones to the latest firmware prior to updating IPO?

Thanks.

RE: Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

It is not necessary.

But if the new IPO firmware comes together with new phone firmware the IPO will provide a new autogenerated update file pointing to new firmware files.

So far so good... But as long as Manager is uploading files to the IP500 it will not allow download of phone firmware files. That can lead into the situation where the IPO is working but the phones don't do while they are waiting for new files.

So better update the phones first.

RE: Upgrade IPO before VoiceMail Pro server?

If you haven't done an upgrade before make sure to export the VMPro call flow before the upgrade. Too many times I have see the upgrade to leave the call flow blank. It still will work off of the root.vmp but you won't be able to make changes.

Dermis and feline can be divorced by manifold methods.*

budbyrd,

Thanks. Great tip. I'll export the call flow. I will also have multiple backups as well (snapshot as well as regular backup files).

Any other tips or suggestions are definitely welcome. I'm not planning to do the upgrade until June when the majority of users will be away. . .
