I am seeing a strange issue whereby some messages get delivered by email and some do not.
When I check the SMTP logs I see that certain messages end with a failure as such:

And some messages end without a failure as such:

Is anyone familiar with this error and can help with why this would be intermittent?

What SMTP server is it ?
Connection seems very slow.
Network problem ?

Good point - I did not realize until you pointed out.
However, if this were the case, why would the shorter (21 sec) message fail and the longer one (35 sec) succeed?
There is nothing that changed in the SMTP server and this has been working for years and started acting up about a week ago.
Is there any way to check if the issue is with the sender or the receiver without changing the SMTP server?

You still need to be a bit more free with the information if we're to be able to provide any help. I'd be looking for any patterns in the destinations addresses and size of emails.

There have been issues with commas and other non-alpha characters in addresses.

Some (most) email servers have limits on the size of attachments.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

For the one that worked it took ~36 seconds to send 100228 bytes which in itself is a very long time.
The one that failed it took ~211 seconds to send 131072 bytes.

This is by no means normal and after 211 seconds I would guess the mail server just gets bored and drops it.

Thanks for the correction. Yes, it is definitely abnormal, I couldn't even believe it when I saw it.
The email addresses are all local. A same user could receive a message once, and not another time. The recording time is limited to 2 minutes so the generated WAV files all fall within the size that is OK to send. There is definitely a problem with the transmission time, which could be network related.

Iv seen this issue before. Something on the SMTP server is queuing the message but is not sending (obviously). I believe its more server related rather network. Have you tried resetting your SMTP service? If that does not work try using a SMTP relay
