Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

(OP)
After just eight years I have a new lappie, the old one still works - but after taking a tumble in the streets of London I accept its days are numbered.

So I have a 'TUF' one now, and have just started putting the apps I use / develop / support everyday on to it.
Took a little while to find my original VFP 9 dvd, so I have that done, and I can find VFP 3 and VFP 5 just not VFP 6.

I do have the key, so I could download it... but 'is it safe?'

Regards

Griff

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

If you download it from Microsoft's site, it should be pretty safe. However, I don't understand WHY you want to have these old versions installed?

If you absolutely must have VFP6 on your machine, copy it from the old machine, and run regsrv32 afterwards to register it.

Why?

Simple, some apps are still running under VFP 6, I still make a living maintaining them and the users have no wish to upgrade the underlying software just to make my life easier.

If the download is available from M$ I'll go look there, better than my boxes in the garage!

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Lst time I had a MSDN subscription the oldest Version downloadable was VFP7 and you won't get SO5 anymore, so if you don't have that downloads and CDs your way is to copy over the old installation and run vfp6.exe /Regserver and vfpclean.app and go into options/file locations to set up the help.

Found it, all installed and working on Win 10.

Three days to get the basics of my old dev machine onto my new one.

Something to think about if you are near changing and you've been doing this a while.

Hardest thing to make work wasn't VFP, it was C#/SQL - getting them to talk.

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Hi Griff,

You are still using VFP6? And your users dont want to upgrade?
You do realize that there are some serious bugs in VFP6, which have been corrected with VFP9SP2?
Anyway it is easy for you, just download VFP9 and install, download and install the updates and you can run.
If you open your .pjx file with VFP9SP2 and you can run your PJX without problems than you are fine. If not please correct the errors.
Rebuilt your pjx and rebuilt your exe
Create a new setup and present your users with the new setup, that's all.

Koen

Hi Koen

I have VFP9 installed, my problem is that the users are seriously remote and perfectly happy with the applications as they are.

Getting them to update to VFP9 would require them to install the runtime modules and frankly they would see that as a waste of time.

There might be bugs in VFP6, but none affecting the apps as they stand, as for my own bugs... bound to be a few in apps going back nearly two decades!

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

I think Griff is right. As a developer, I would always use the latest version of VFP and every other major developer tools that I rely on. But it's a different matter with remote users who have been happily using an application for many years. In my own experience, it can be very hard to convince people to update to a newer version when they can see no benefit in doing so.

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Griff,
If you are happy with VFP6 and you are sure the corrections made in later versions do not apply to your application, than the only reason to update remains: VFP9 offers a more modern UI possibility, when you can live with your UI you should be OK.
When you can also live with, to name some of the enhancements FoxyPreviewer or FoxCharts than you are also OK.
Rest assure, I there is no critic, it was just a suggestion.
Regards,
Koen

No criticism taken, and bear in mind the apps are nearly 20 years old, so the UI is all a bit grey...

And dull, and very, very familiar

Aren't most of us a bit grey and familiar these days? Not dull though I hope :)

RE: Where would I find a safe VFP 6 install...

Well, not grey, probably familiar and perhaps dull.

I'm not grey either despite being 64 - just thought I'd be polite...
