Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

Dear colleagues:

I have Visual FoxPro 9 installed in the folder C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 in a Windows XP computer.

Now I installed it on a Windows 10 computer. I moved all my VFP 9 projetcs to this new Windows 10 computer.

Problem is:
In the Windows 10 computer, VFP 9 is installed in the folder C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9.

In my projects all referenced to classes, icons, etc are to folder C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9, so, in the Windows 10 computer I have to inform the new location, as VPF asks when I open an existing project.

1) Can I move the folder \Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 that is inside C:\Program files (x86) to the C:\ folder?
Or will I have to uninstall it from C:\Program files (x86)\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 and reinstall it on C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9

2) Will VFP 9 work if located in folder C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9?

Thank you,

RE: Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

Because of UAC and compilation of ffc classes, updates in some DBFs within HOME() etc to do as in XP and install into another location.

The installation interview lets you specify a target folder, so make use of that. Notice: The path a) can't be choosen visually and b) has to preexist, so create the folder, copy it's full path into clipboard and then start the setup.

As a reference, see http://woody-prolib.blogspot.com/2010/01/vfp9-komp... That's German, the essential paragraph:

Quote (wOOdy)

Installation into the "c: \ Program Files \" folder is a bad idea for various reasons (development systems are not pure "only executable" end-user programs) therefore you should install them outside of this specially watched and restricted system folder branch (for me that's \Develop\)

You would only have half the problem, if you had made use of HOME(), but that aside, VFP installation best works into another folder and now you have double reason to do so.
It won't suffice to just copy things over, it's easiest to uninstall and reinstall.

Others might list you some things you can do instead, starting with running vfpclean.app after you moved the files manually. But that list is extensive, it's shorter, timewise, to deinstall and reinstall.

Bye, Olaf.

RE: Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

Ok, Olaf, just to clear:
1) May I install VFP in the C:\ folder, so it will be installed in C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9
2) Will I have to create a folder in the C:\ folder, for example C:\Myfolder, so, VFP will be installed in C:\Myfolder\\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9

My projects in Windows XP refers to C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 for location of classes, etc, and it would be nice if VFP is installed in the C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 folder in my Windows 10 computer.

Thank you,

RE: Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

I might be missing something, but I can't see anything to prevent you installing VFP itself or your project in any folders you like. When you run the Setup program from the VFP CD, you can choose to do a custom install, at which point it will ask you where you want to install. Tell it the name you want for your folder. It will create the folder if it doesn't already exist.

Put another way, you can set your new system up with exactly the same way folders as before, and it should work fine.

I was in the same position when I migrated from XP. I had VFP itself installed in C:\VFP9, and I use C:\FoxProjects for my projects. I created those same folders on the new machine, and it works fine.

RE: Visual FoxPro 9 in Windows 10

The path you specify is the full path of the Home() folder, there is nothing added to it. So you specify C:\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9\ and VFP is installed there. My Home folder ends in "\VFP9", not "\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9".

Bye, Olaf.
