Why does a Avaya 5410 phone work on an Office IP / Small business edition, but an Avaya 5420 won't

Why does a Avaya 5410 phone work on an Office IP / Small business edition, but an Avaya 5420 won't

(OP)
I have two of these phones that both will not working when plugged into the Small Office Edition Office IP unit (software 4.2).

Could the 5420 not be compatible to the Small Office Edition unit?

RE: Why does a Avaya 5410 phone work on an Office IP / Small business edition, but an Avaya 5420 won't

The first question, why?
The small office can only go up to 4.2 which had it's last update in 2009!
It is a nice little unit, i agree on that.
If it is just to play with it then open monitor, enable tftp and see if the phone looks for firmware.

Following your suggestion, where do I "open monitor and enable TFTP" would that be in the phone itself or the Small Office?

I am sorry but these are really basic stuff and we are not a free helpdesk.

Can you clarify 'not working'? The Avaya compatibility matrix lists both as being compatible with R4.2

make sure that the 5420 is R5.0 or 6.0 because on that old release it had issues with the wrong release. On the newer ones it doesn't check as much.

When I plug the 5420 into the Small Office unit, the screen says something like: "please wait" can't remember for sure. but something indicating it was in the boot mode, yet the screen never changes.

Not sure how to find out which or 5 or 6 that it is.

Seriously, you come here for free support and you can't even bother to remember or take a picture of exactly what's on the screen.

I'll be back on site tomorrow, I'll check that then - Thanks for that.

On the screen it has a 6 at the top, with right below that showing: Please Wait

RE: Why does a Avaya 5410 phone work on an Office IP / Small business edition, but an Avaya 5420 won't

if it is showing please wait then it is trying to download the correct firmware to operate

you need to correct your file server settings & ensure your file server (usual.y manager) has the correct version of firmware available.

RE: Why does a Avaya 5410 phone work on an Office IP / Small business edition, but an Avaya 5420 won't

This is an old note that I found;

54xx Upgrades (please wait …)

Digital Phone upgrades are disabled by default in IP Office version 4.1+. This often results in a ‘Please Wait…’ message displayed on early digital phones being installed on a new system. The error message typically states that the control unit has not yet been able to find a suitable source for the upgraded digital phone firmware. The rest of this post will cover how to go about resolving this situation.
In order to upgrade a digital phone, you must first enable firmware upgrades by one of the two methods. Both procedures require a reboot of the control unit to make the change effective.
1. In Manager under User->NoUser->Source Numbers add a new entry ‘ALLOW_5410_UPGRADES‘. Although this may seem odd for a 5420 phone, the command is the same.
2. On the PC running Manager, in the C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\Manager directory, there are two files named turn_on.bat and turn_off.bat. Right click the turn_on.bat file and select edit. Here replace the <IP Address> with the IP address of the control unit, removing the <> brackets as well. Then save and double click the batch file. You should see a command window pop-up and stop with ‘Press any key to continue…’ any other message typically indicates an error.
Next, verify that a TFTP server is available at the IP Address specified on the System->System form. If the above is correct there should be requests in the TFTP log, and a message viewable in SystemMonitor about Upgrade Engine started. The files should transfer and the phone display should change to waiting for download or upgrading firmware.
If the Upgrade Engine started message contains an error=1, unexpected EOF, or Len=0 this indicates that either the Firewall on the PC, or the TFTP server is blocking the transfer. Disable the Windows Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing service during the upgrade. If needed download an alternate TFTP server as well.
[Edit] When the phones have finished upgrading disable the upgrades through the same method used to enable the upgrades. This will keep the phones from trying to upgrade on each reboot.
