Merlin Legend Power & MLX Cords - Cube?

(OP)
I notice the AC power cords for the Legend have the cable going through a moveable square cube, about 1.5" square. Recently I purchased a new "Lucent MLX phone", and it came with the same square cube around the phone's conductor cord. What purpose does this cube service? I have not seen these on any other electronic systems - only the Legend.

Of all the Merlin systems, this was the first time I've seen these on both the KSU and phones. Was the Legend more susceptible than other systems?
