Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

(OP)
In the past, VFP had always shown in the 'File' dropdown menu a list of the recently used projects; and if you clicked on a project the various tabs would be restored as you had last been working on them. It no longer does so - I don't know why.

Have seen suggestions that deleting or restoring the foxuser.* files might help, but that has not been successful.

Does anyone know how I can get them back? Thanks.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Mike. This is set to 4 items (same as before); but no projects are being displayed on the 'File' dropdown.

RE: Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

Andrew,

The recent project list is stored in the Foxuser files. You could check that RESOURCE is not set OFF, and that it is not pointing to a non-accessible directory or a read-only file.

RE: Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

Thanks Mike.

When I start VFP, SET(“RESOURCE”) returns OFF. I can key in SET RESOURCE ON - when SET(“RESOURCE”) returns ON.

But if I close VFP and restart, SET(“RESOURCE”) again returns OFF. Is there a way to make the SET RESOURCE ON persist after re-starting VFP?

As mentioned, clicking on ‘File’ does not come up with a list of recent projects (even though Tools|Options|View|Recent shows 4).

The value of SYS(2005) is “C:\USERS\ . . . \Visual Foxpro 9\FOXUSER.DBF”. That pair of files does indeed exist and shows its ‘Date modified’ as today. If I rename them, VFP still fires up, but as before, recent projects do not show.

I have tried replacing the Foxuser.* files with those from another machine where the list of projects shows, but (on the original machine), the problem persists.

This problem first arose when, if I ran a particular application in a VFP session, after returning to VFP the list of projects would not show. However the situation was always cleared by restarting VFP. However one day, after running that application, I went into Tools | Options – think I changed the Recent files option to 5 – and clicked in ‘Set as default’. Since then the list of projects has never been visible.

Any further suggestions would be most welcome.

RE: Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

Issuing SET RESOURCE ON | OFF only works for the current session. It doesn't remember the setting for next time. Also, even if you issue the command at the start of the session, it is too late. The resource file setting is acted on before the IDE appears.

Try placing RESOURCE = ON in your Config.FPW file.

Thank you Mike. Setting RESOURCE = ON in CONFIG.FPW seems to have done the trick.

I'm not sure why it went wrong in the first place. Originally I am pretty sure that I did not have a CONFIG.FPW file in the folder where the VFP session starts. I think that it was when (for some reason) RESOURCE had been turned off by my application, when I went into Tools | Options and tried to SAVE a different change, subsequent VFP sessions started without RESOURCE = ON.

You have been a great help. Andrew

RE: Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

Glad to have helped, Andrew. It does seem surprising that is was set OFF in the first place. Usually, the problem is the other way round: it insists on creating resource files when you don't want it to. But that's VFP for you.

You should be able to use the Options dialog to set resource on and then save the setting so you don't need a Config file.

RE: Showing the list of recent projects in the 'File' menu

You're right, Tamar, but the option is well hidden. For the benefit of anyone who doesn't know: You've got to go to Tools / Options / File Locations, then make as if you are editing the location for the resource file. In the box where you specify the path, there is a checkbox labeled, "Use resource file". I thought I would mention this because it is not particularly obvious.
