Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

(OP)
We have a IP406 V2 control unit with a DCPx30 V2 hooked up via expansion port. When we hook up phones through the expansion unit, the displays on them do not work. They're just all dark. However, if I push a button (menu) I can briefly see the display, but it goes back to dark within a second. Also, when the phone is first plugged into a port, I can see the date/time on the display for a split second before they go dark. The manager software see the phones. The phones all function as they should. We can send/receive calls with them. The buttons and LEDs all work as they should... it's just the display. We've tried numerous phones 6424D+, 6408D+, 4424D+ ... they all do the same thing. When they're plugged directly into the main unit via one of the 8 built in digital station ports, the displays all work as they should. The cable between the main unit and the expansion IS an actual avaya OEM cable, not an ethernet cord. Both the main unit and the expansion have been upgraded to the latest software via the Manager software. This has me completely stumped. Has anybody else ever experienced this? We also have a V1 30 digital port unit that was tried and the phones still had the same issue.

RE: Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

Does the software on the expansion unit match that of the Control unit?

I'm guessing that is seen in the manager software, under the version field? If so, then I do not think so: The control unit shows 5.0 (26). The expansion shows 10.1 (-2147418109)

There's your problem

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. When I use the "upgrade" feature in Manager, it doesn't provide an option to upgrade the main unit. It's greyed out.

RE: Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

You can only upgrade the main unit so far, it would be better to downgrade the expansion module (same process as upgrading).

It should give you an option to downgrade the DS module to the correct release.

The upgrade wizard will only show upgrades if all prerequisites are met:
  • Firewall disabled on the PC running Manager
  • In Manager BOTH working directories must point to the folder with binaries, by default the Manager folder.
  • In Manager BOOTP/TFTP must be enabled
  • Manager MUST be the right version, for R5.0.xx it will show 7.0.xx for Manager and expansion binaries, current modules show 10.1 which is R8.1 or 10.1(not confusing at all)
  • There must be a file named bin.cfg in the folder containing the binaries
  • PC MUST have a fixed IP Address in the same subnet as IP Office
  • There MUST be a BOOTP record in Manager of that unit (if you extracted a config from the unit the BOOTP record will be autocreated) with "IP406v2.bin" as the firmware to load
    a example BOOTP entry : ip406v2.bin,192.168.42.1,00e0078b9145,True,00:00,MyIPOffice
There must be a experienced engineer for upgrading the software, many things can go wrong with that version leaving you a "dead" unit in a infinite reboot loop
Maybe there is a FAQ for upgrading, i know how tricky it can be, do a google search if you are not familiar with upgrading but make sure the handouts are for R5.0 or lower(the working procedure is the same)

Success! Thank you all who responded! I finally managed to locate the correct version of Manager that was needed for our unit. The control unit shows 5.0 (26) and the DS expansion as well as the POTS expansion modules both now show 7.0 (26) and everything is working correctly! I must admit these version numbers, revisions, etc are extremely confusing.

Yes, but if you were around all the years ago to know that the predecessor to IP Office got to Version 2.2 and the new IP Office used the same expansion modules (long since obsolete) so they carried on the version numbering for the modules from 3 and started the control unit back at 1.0
Not saying I think it was a good (or bad) idea, but that's what they did.

RE: Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

Great post from @intrigrant

Not sure I'd have had the energy to type that all out! (or C&P pipe)

Glad you got that all sorted

Thanks again to everybody who provided assistance here! It's greatly appreciated!

If you guys don't mind, I have one more question: Is there any benefit in upgrading these units beyond the point they're at now? I read somewhere that licensing was required above a certain level. Should they just be left alone? (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

RE: Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

I would stick to that release if I'm honest, there are quite a few changes from 5->6 plus it requires an upgrade license which will be difficult to get hold of now.

RE: Phone Display Not Working when using Digital Expansion Module

The upgrade licenses are only for IP500 systems.
The highest version possible is 6.0 which does not add much features apart from the VM Pro server/client software.
If you don't have VM Pro or SIP trunks then stick to R5.
