BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

(OP)
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii THERE ! :)

Here an other annoying bug i discovered.

The BCM always automaticly on connection upgrade the frimware of my 1165e to an SIP frimware....
as far i know the bcm don't support SIP ?!!?! so i really don't understand why the bcm always do this... this is very annoying i need always to re flash it in TFTP and disable the service of UFTP in the bcm.

Unless someone here will tell me that BCM have top secret SIP feature, beside of this possibility i wish to find a way to stop the BCM upgrading that phone. My only solution that i have is to connect the hard drive in a redhat linux computer and delete the 1165eSIP.bin manually.

But i'm looking for a idea less wild.

Thanks!

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

SIP phone support for the BCM range was developed at 5.0 and enchanced at 6.0 but not officially released as Avaya wanted the IPO to take over. I have along with other members on this forum played with SIP phones on BCM and I would not recommend you using them unless on a lab system. There is a guide I wrote on my website that explains what we managed to find out.

The 1165 IP phone was never supported on the BCM range, but there are ways to upload the UNIStim / SIP firmware onto the BCM.

Firebird,

I play with at home, i dunno why i got interested to this domain (Telecom) but i learn and discover every days about it, i'm originaly a network administrator and webmaster who endup as a maintenance worker in a public school, ah ! what a change of domain !

Anwyay !! i just play with that system for fun, i got it on ebay for 300$ and there is a guy who craked the BCM (Jailbreak) all licence unlock to maximum, i started my learning with a compact ics, a company gived it to me and i learned from scratch there just one phone one KSU and 2 manual, installer guide and administrator guide. After some years i was no more satisfied i need MORE more learning more features, so i get a BCM400 3.7 last 1 year exploited it at 110% Still not satisfied now i get that BCM450 R6... what next ?? Maybe a CS1000 OR a Ucx conversion of the BCM450 i will see in few years.

Anyway by playing with the BCM450 R6 by trying to see the maximum of it capability, i saw in the nortel element manager a SIP SET section but everytime i access it, it crash. In the Avaya element manager i don'T see that folder anymore SIP SET has completly gone.

So if the BCM can really support SIP set i don't see where i can set any config of it for clients set.

I also scanned all port of the BCM with a port tools scanner, and port 5060 is closed, so i removed from my mind the possibility of SIP set on it.

Your guide look very interesting !!!! i will need to take a look on it for sure !

Beside of this you wrote 'but there are ways to upload the UNIStim / SIP firmware onto the BCM.'
I understand in that sentend that we can upload to the BCM the frimware the bcm will use for phones ?? if this is true it's a great news :D i need to know how !

THANKS !
Mike

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

If the sets are only for BCM and the BCM is fully patched then there is no need to upgrade the firmware any further.
The patch installs the latest firmware's for all the sets that the BCM with it's patches will support.
Like most things when it is no longer supported then stop upgrading components.

However if using the set for other systems as well in your lab then by all means do so but remember it's not supported.
In fact I think they stopped with the firmware upgrades too.

"So if the BCM can really support SIP"
SIP is not supported, as mentioned it was never released, and never perfected/finished.

I have a feeling your not far from me, are we connected on LinkedIn?

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

If the BCM automatically "upgrades" the 1165 phone to SIP firmware, that means this 1165 SIP firmware binary file is present on the BCM file system. That is certainly not normal.

Did you by any chance copy new firmware files to the BCM? If that's the case, you should just delete the 1165 firmware file (0626xxx.bin) - the firmware upgrades of the 1165 phone should then stop.

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

The BCM always automaticly on connection upgrade the frimware of my 1165e to an SIP frimware....

I've never been able to get a SIP set to update firmware from the BCM. I've always had to point the phone at a TFTP server. As previously stated the 1165e isn't even supported on the BCM so I don't know how SIP firmware would be residing in the correct folder unless someone manually put it there at the Linux level. If the phone really is getting flashed to SIP firmware I'd like to know how this was made to work.

You are Right Curlycord, we are not that far, abit far but not really to compare BC, i'm in quebec around montreal.
I don't have a LinkedIn.

Ucxguy here the alarm when it upgrade my 1165e

Terminal Dn:317: firmware version being upgraded from 0626C7J to bcmmode\SIP1165e04.04.31.00.bin

After my set turn completly useless.....

I wish to copy them on the BCM but how you want i access the hard drive, this is not as easy like the BCM400 3.7 just make a share to the drive.

If anyone know how to access the hard drive files without pulling out the hard drive on an other machine i would like to know !

Thanks guys for answers it's very cool :)

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

I do know how to access but too sensitive to talk about on the forums.

I figure it was Montreal by your accent lol.

As for useless Ip set you need to convert it back to Unistim.

Our good friend Joe did a video on it here.

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

"If the phone really is getting flashed to SIP firmware I'd like to know how this was made to work."

For the UFTP uploader, a binary file is just a binary file - when it's "told" to upload it to a phone, it will do that no matter if the contents is SIP or UNISTIM firmware. A better question is why there is a SIP firmware on the release 6 image - my guess is Avaya decided to put it there. The unfortunate consequence is the conversion of your 1165 phone to SIP.

To stop this behavior, you'd have to delete the file SIP1165e04.04.31.00.bin from the BCM file system. BCM mode firmware is located in the directory /nn/etc/IpSetFw/BcmMode - I checked my BCM50 - I don't see any SIP firmware in there. Maybe it's just on BCM450 images.

The info how to access the BCM Linux command line is - as curlycord pointed out - a sensitive matter and is not normally discussed here. Also, the command line access is not for everyone - you could easily kill the BCM by making inappropriate changes. You would need to get the password of the day for your BCM...

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

Whenever Avaya releases a newer release of firmware for the IP UNIStim sets (which tends to be once a year), I check that they are compatible for the BCM as the release is actually for the CS1K range of phone systems.

The readme.txt file will mention if it's compatible and so far, my sets all have something like 0621C96.bin etc.

I use a process that uploads them via FTP or USB through a SSH access tool and this method isn't for discussion on this forum for reasons that are clear to those who know how it's done.

I also upload the lastest SIP files such as SIP1165e04.04.31.00.bin as the "31" release has only recently been released by Avaya.

I think to just remove the hard drive and install it in a PC with centOs or Redhat will be more simple to manage files inside the bcm, if something happen i still have the backup of the RAID hdd#2

It look not easy access like the bcm 3.7 in windows, it was a peice of cake ! (for me) But having full power like i had on my 3.7 look very hard on this 450R6

Do a Remote Desktop of the operating system exist ? Like the 3.7 had (VNC) ?

I heared the operating system in the BCM is Redhat but as i remember redhat is not a Text version of os..

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

No it does not.

I connected the Harddrive #1 on a PC booted with usb stick Hiren's Ultimate Boot Tool, used Linux Recovery Partition tool. Navigated in the BCM hdd
i renamed the File .old because i don't really like to delete in case if ever need it back.....

but damn.... the uftp still get it !

Terminal Dn:317: firmware version being upgraded from 0626C7J to bcmmode\SIP1165e04.04.31.00.old

What ever the name the system know it's that file... that is crazy !
i will try to copy them in a usb stick and really delete them.

I will keep update.

RE: BCM450 R6 frimware upgrade problematic on 1165e

(OP)
I deleted them all, and i replaced them by latest Nortel Firmware, (because logo and open sound is really nicer) and the UFTP accepted it and know what file for model of phones, even my 1165e is updating properly now like magic !

Terminal Dn:312: firmware version being upgraded from 0623C8Y to bcmmode\0623C7J.bin
