fibre cable

fibre cable

fibre cable

Small campus network using OM1 62.5/125 MM cable, all distances under 500 meters

need to add a location with a distance of approx 800 meters
would adding a single mode fiber cable with single mode media 10/100/1000 baseT converters be the best way to go

RE: fibre cable

The rule of thumb back in my cabling days was anything over 1.5K consider using single mode and anything over 2.5K only use single mode.

.8K is well under either of those thresholds.

RE: fibre cable

If you're installing new cable either way, I would only consider single mode these days. Also, most media converters are fixed speed on the fiber side. We'd normally use an SFP module directly into the switch.

RE: fibre cable

I really try to stay away from media convertor if it all possible.
Why have another device that can fail or get missed with.

RE: fibre cable

One has to assume some things with the limited info provided.
I assume this is to provide connectivity the additional location only? Not trying to link back individual devices/industrial controllers/ etc. over the fiber link?

If going from one switch at the head end to a new switch at the additional location. the OM1/62.5 MM would suffice. It would keep fiber types the same all over.

With the advances in technology, and the industry moving away from OM1, you might consider OM3/50 micron fiber. All around better specifications, better link speeds between switches, etc. May also be more readily available than 62.5. Just a thought...
