Adding Color to the Console in Turbo 4.5

(OP)
I have been been looking everywhere for some guidance on how to change the colors(text and background)in the .exe files made by my Turbo C++ 4.5.  I found that the header conio.h includes functions to do so, but when I include the syntax in my programs, no dice!  I would appreciate any help.  I am running it on Win98.  I suspect it might have to do with the portability to 32 bit????

Also, I would really like some additional guidance on what a good IDE to upgrade to would be.  I am new to C++ and am a student.  We learn on Turbo, but there has to be better out there since it was written for the Win3.1 OS.

RE: Adding Color to the Console in Turbo 4.5

The problem may not lay in Win32 or Turbo 4.5. Show a small snippet of code and we'll see if we can help. I've used conio before and it does work but is not very intuitive.

My preference for an IDE is Borland's C++ Builder. If you are a student, go might be able to the "Professional" edition for about the same price and the "Personal" edition. Also, the compiler C++ 5.5 is available for free from www.borland.com but this does not include the IDE or debugger.
