I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

(OP)

Hi There,

I run really long and complicated working sessions on my system and it is an absolute PAIN that I have to write down or type up a list of my running programs every time I have to shut down my system.

Does ANYONE know how I can copy the text shown in the Task Manager (see the attachment) into a text file that I can then restore my working environment when I restart? I know I can take a screen shot but that is pretty inelegant and I'd much prefer a text file, so I can manipulate the results.

Ciao, Jacq.

You could try an app like Process Explorer, or some other 3rd party app similar. (Proc Explorer allows you to Save As and save the running apps in a text file)

I found this power shell script that worked a charm.

get-process | where-object {$_.mainwindowhandle -ne 0} | select-object name, mainwindowtitle

Why not hibernate rather than shutdown?

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Alternatively, if you do not wish to use powershell

tasklist | findstr /v " 0 "

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Thanks to hairlesssupportmonkey and xwb for sharing those. I just tested xwb's and it spits out a nice list direct to the cmd window. To get it to text, just add the redirect command at the end. Something like this:

CODE -->

tasklist | findstr /v " 0 ">"C:\temp\testlist.txt"

"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57

Hello Everyone,

Almost, but no cigar to XWB & kjv1611. The list is great, but it doesn't list the Names of the Files which are open the way that task Manager does. When I want to remember something like "Bryophyllum Search in IPNI 2016-05-01.txt" - notepad.exe just doesn't cut it!

Apologies to hairlessupportmonkey as I haven't had a chance to reinstall Process Explorer yet so I'm still not sure if that will work or not - I had it on my old Vista system, but I lost a lot of stuff when I was upgraded to Win 7 in April and I'm still reconstructing - I am very slow because of my disability issues - essentially the mind is willing, but the body wants to go off and sleep all day! LOL! I've never used Powershell so I don't know anything about it.

To strongm re: "Why not hibernate rather than shutdown? " Sometime you just have to switch it off like when Windows Updates makes you do it or the thunderstorm is coming. Normally my system is always on and I average about two to three weeks between shutdowns.

To anyone else who is looking at this question - please go back and look at the picture so you can see exactly what I am trying to capture - it is the Aqua text on the Dark Purple background inside the Task Manager Window.

Ciao, Jacq.

You can simply import the generated file into Excel and format as you like.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Do you just want to shutdown your programs before you shutdown the system? You could use taskkill. Type taskkill /? for all the parameters

For instance if you wish to kill all the chrome processes

taskkill /im chrome.exe

To kill all processes with starting with Bryophyllum in the title

taskkill /fi "windowtitle eq Bryophyllum*

The parameters are similar to tasklist. If you want to know what will be killed, replace taskkill with tasklist.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

(OP)
No, I don't want to just kill them, I want to make a list so I can reopen all the files and re-create my working environment when I re-start the system,
Thanks, Jacq.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

You might want to have a look at using the shutdown command. Specifically, you might want to have a look at

shutdown /g

I don't think it will do everything you require (as it only restarts certain registered programs), but it might help reduce the effort you need to make.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

you seem to not understand hibernate or sleeping. They save all of memory to a file on the hard drive and then power off the machine. While you have to fully restart after installing new windows patches you do not have to restart because you want to shut down before a storm. Simply put your machine to sleep.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Bill, don't think that is quite right; sleeping does not "save all of memory to a file" nor does it "then power off the machine."

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Another alternative - use a VM. You only ever need to suspend it before shutting down the host. Then when you start it again, it is where you left off.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Indeed

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Sorry I was thinking of hybernate mode which does what I said above. A link for setting it up follows

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Quite so, which is why I suggested it back on 3rd Jan ... smile But sadly the OP has already pointed out that this is not a solution that can work for them.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

(OP)
Guys, we are getting off track here -

what I WANT to do is find a way to copy the actual text showing in the applications window of the Task Manager:

for example - "Super Finder Textify List After.txt - Notepad"
or "C:\Windows.old\Users\Public\Pictures\Kodak Pictures\17-03-2014"
These two lines above took me almost 3 minutes to type by looking backwards and forwards between the Task Manager and the posting box here. I currently have 5 text files open and 4 Explorer windows, plus E-mail and two Firefox windows - can you imagine how long it would take me to type all of it? (I have brain damage from a car accident and my short term transfer memory is quite damaged. - my handwriting is not too flash either - if I write things down by hand often I can't read them ten minutes later!)

Can we stay on track? I can select what I want to copy, it is just when I right click it "Copy" does not come up as one of my menu options.

Sorry I haven't checked in for a few days I've been having trouble with my braodband connection and I've only just got back online today

Ciao, Jacq.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

Use Tasklist

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?
Time flies like an arrow, however, fruit flies like a banana.

Never mind this jesus character, stars had to die for me to live.

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

>Can we stay on track?
We are. The issue that I see is that, using basic Windows commands and free utilities, there seems to be no simple way to extract everything you want at one time. There might be a way, but I don't see it yet.

The command tasklist /v will give you everything you want in the "Window Title" column. EXCEPT, it will not show you the path of open Explorer windows.

Direct your complaints about that to Microsoft developers, but there is a reason why certain disparate components are not accessible by context menu commands when those elements are grouped in a UI dialogue.

Powershell might be your better bet

e.g

get-process explorer | format-list *

from the list you might see

You can now select the items you want in your list.

e.g

CODE --> Powershell

PS C:\Users\Sean> get-process explorer | format-list name,path

Name : explorer
Path : C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE

When you are satisfied you have everthing you need, remove explorer from the command

get-process | format-list name,path

To list everything on the screen.

to save to a file

get-process | format-list name,path | out-file “c:\process.txt”

Make sure you run powershell as Administrator or you get this:

CODE --> Powershell

PS C:\Users\Sean> get-process | format-list name,path | out-file “c:\process.txt”
out-file : Access to the path 'C:\process.txt' is denied.

I know this is an old thread, but for closure's sake...

First of all, I think many of you misunderstood the OP's question. In task manager, the focus here is on the Applications tab, not the Processes tab. guitarzan's suggestion to use the command line tasklist /v does manage to capture that tab, but it also captures a LOT of other clutter making it difficult to sift out the unwanted data.

hairlessupportmonkey's first suggestion (get-process | where-object {$_.mainwindowhandle -ne 0} | select-object name, mainwindowtitle) gets very close, but still adds a bit of clutter and doesn't get it automatically into a text file. Here's how I'd modify that PowerShell command:

CODE --> PowerShell

gps | ? {$_.mainwindowtitle.length -ne 0} | select mainwindowtitle | out-file C:\Temp\applications.txt

This takes out the name column and saves it right to a text file.

jfelis,
For future reference, you might want to show/express a little more patience. No one is getting paid to help you.

You may not be familiar with PowerShell, but running that command is easy. Simply go to your Start Menu, type powershell, and left-click "Windows PowerShell ISE". A window similar to the one below will open. Copy/paste that command I listed above and press enter. That's all there is to it. You can modify the location and name of the text file that gets created (keep in mind that if you have UAC enabled, you won't be able to save directly to C:\, so instead choose a subfolder that isn't a system folder).

Every IT person really needs to have some basic knowledge of powershell.

Definitely, makes life easier!

RE: I need to find an easy way to copy the text from the programs list in Task Manager to a text file

tasklist /FI "SESSIONNAME eq Console"

tasklist /FI "SESSIONNAME eq Console"

No, that does not produce the right list. This thread is about the Applications tab in task manager, not the Processes tab.

Hi, ThisHi,
This is a short response to let you know I saw the powershell info this morning and I'll try it out on the weekend as I've got 400 cacti in the house from my show on the previous weekend and my priority has to be to get them out before the lack of light damages them. FYI, to hairlessupportmonkey, I'm a Botanist who uses her computer extensively, NOT an IT professional! I did my Computer Science training back in the 1980s - so I got to be pretty good with Machine Code punch cards and Pascal, but the convolutions of Windows tend to get on my nerves.

I apologize to anyone who thought I was getting impatient, that was not so, it was just that from my perspective I wasn't getting an answer that I understood. I am always happy to learn something new, but some times I just need a bit more explanation that most folks. I usually don't even ask questions here unless I draw a blank elsewhere. I really do appreciate all the help,

Thanks, Jacq.
