Jabber for MAC OS X El Capitan version 10.11.5

I have been trying to get Jabber (any version) working on a Macbook Pro but have not had any success. All I ever get back from it is "cannot communicate with server". Jabber (10.5.x) works on a windows 7 machine with a non-LDAP user.

There doesn't seem to be any way to collect logs on Jabber for MAC. Anyone have any suggestions? If Jabber for MAC is solely dependent on DNS, that would be good to know. I set the server manually in Jabber (for MAC) to an IP to get around DNS.
