RE: Police: Do as we say and not as we do!

Misleading post title. It's not really "Do as we say and not as we do!". The cops never told anyone to backup or protect their computers with anti-malware software. It was (all) the IT people advising that and the cops just didn't get the message, same as everyone else.

As I had said before, it's nice to have good honest criminals that actually allow you to decrypt your data after you pay your ransom. Sort of like NOT killing the hostage before you negotiate for a money/hostage swap.

Of course they're still ultra scumbags, yet a redeeming ray of light is mixed in.

The police have always said, "Do NOT pay ransom!" However, that's exactly what they did. Hence the title.

That reminds me of a post I read at Sophos where the people who ran a dark website that sold illegal drugs and guns suddenly disappeared with the money but never delivered anything. If criminals can't trust criminals, who can they trust? (I wish I could find that post.)

I see, missed that concept totally!! Well, that's easy advice for anyone to give if you a) don't need your data back and b) you don't have a backup. It looks quite a bit better to pay if you're locked out of YOUR data which most of us prize in some way. I think I would pay as I would go neurotic without my data.
