POS Malware Infections Detection and Protection

POS Malware Infections Detection and Protection

(OP)
So I came across this article about the "Backoff" malware that is one virus/tool being used by hackers now to steal credit card information:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/backoff-malware-t...

So it got me to thinking: How would one go about checking a Point of Sale system for malware? I guess for those that are Windows based, you could use typical Windows tools. But are there any tools/methods that could be used for any POS regardless of the OS?

This is just a curiosity of mine. Won't really have time to dig in, of course, nor a POS likely that I'd get to test anything on.
