Reading ascii data

Hi there I'm using WTX 8.4 and we have an input file containing a Zoned Decimal field which contains a value of 00000r which is ascii -2. However, I just can't get the type tree to read it - the field is defined as Number, Character, Zoned, Sign=Yes, Pad=Yes. I have tried setting the Data Language to Ascii (Deprecated) but it makes no difference. If that is deprecated what are we supposed to use? The map seems to be reading the data as EBCDIC as a value of 00000K is read correctly. How do you read Ascii data? Thanks in advance.
