On the R1 side (EMC srdf) everything works fine but on the R2 side while I can see the luns uing syminq all other commands fail -

symcfg discover gives -

The Symmetrix configuration could not be loaded for a locally-attached Symmetrix

It appears to be a storage side config issue to me but I want to be sure it's not a AIX problem.
