Move mailbox off server to Outlook on PC

Move mailbox off server to Outlook on PC

I tried to find this answer in Googledom, but I must not be asking the right question.

I want to move a small company off SBS 2003 Exchange 2003 to just standalone Outlook mailboxes on their PCs. I know you're going to say WHY. Because they used to have 5 employees and they bought the server to host a centralized document management system. They were using Exchange. But now they are down to 2 employees and one of them is using their AOL address for business and personal and not Outlook/Exchange at all. So, I'm supporting ONE USER that is going to be leaving the company soon and I'd rather not set up the replacement employee in Exchange.

I am wanting to move the departing user OFF Exchange and onto the new employee's computer so that he can have access to all her old email. The workstations ARE part of a domain.

Also, when the server needs to replaced to run the DMS, I can perhaps setup a home built redneck server instead of paying for SBS again.

RE: Move mailbox off server to Outlook on PC

So you go into Outlook, create a new PST then drag and drop everything you need into there. That will get the data into the PST from Exchange (or you could use exmerge on the server but doesn't sound like you're an exadmin). The complication will be setting up the inbound and outbound connectors for outlook as you need to be able to send and receive email which is what the server does for you.

RE: Move mailbox off server to Outlook on PC

How about an EXPORT from the Outlook client to another PST file and then change the Outlook settings? Then run off the newly created (local) PST file.

These people are NOT using Exchange to send mail for some strange reason. They have each Outlook client set to send out via their ISP SMTP server and NOT their domain name smtp server (smtp.company.com).

Regardless, you have to divorce Outlook from needing to talk to the server. I guess it's simpler than I thought.

I thought our little wild time had just begun.
