Problem with files being automatically deleted in SharePoint

Problem with files being automatically deleted in SharePoint

Problem with files being automatically deleted in SharePoint

(OP)
One of our customers is reporting weird behavior on one of our SharePoint sites, and I wondered if anyone had seen similar and might be able to advise on a solution.

Files in a folder are suddenly disappearing, as if deleted, but when the user looks in the recycle bin they file files with strange names, but having the original locations of the files deleted. So for example a 'Status report Sept 2008.doc' disappears but there is a file called vya3765 in the recycle (not the weird named files have no document extension). My guess is the names are those SharePoint uses to internally store the file?

She also says when they delete a file from a listing/folder, its sometimes not disappearing from the folder, but is still there, AND ALSO in the recycle bin (i.e. a copy or shortcut I guess). She thinks what happens is when they delete a document it doesn't get deleted as it should but a copy appears in the recycle bin too. Sometime later something deletes the recycle bin file, but also deletes the non-deleted file in the folder if that makes any sense.

has anyone come across similar behavior, and a possible remedy?
Thanks
Andy

RE: Problem with files being automatically deleted in SharePoint

Are there any workflows running that would be deleting the files?
Workflows (Visual Studio or Designer), event handlers, document management policies...

With the April 2012 cumulative update, we encountered issues where lists and libraries were being deleted.

Thanks ehaze. Workflows etc. were the first thing I thought about and investigated, but couldn't see anything obvious. The weird names I mentioned turned out to be names assigned to tif documents but a bit of a red herring. Could you tell me more about the cumulative update issues?
Thanks
Andy

RE: Problem with files being automatically deleted in SharePoint

We installed the Aprile 2012 CU and everything looked good.

Then users started reporting missing Lists and other items.

We had to restore the missing items as users reported them.

The odd thing was, using PowerShell we could see the 'missing' content. But, the using the UI, the data was missing.
