Ldap error--id: cannot find name for user ID

I have RHEL clients that get the error-- "id: cannot find name for user ID". The ldap server is AIX running slapd. AIX clients don't have this problem. I inherited this issue and not all that familiar with ldap but getting better as I try to troubleshoot. When logged in as root, everything is fine but when changing to the ldap user, he can't see user ID names and ownerships just show uid and gid. Checked permissions on /etc/resolv.conf and passwd and group....all are 644......suggestions?
