coax on a 550 meter distance
coax on a 550 meter distance
(OP)
I have an IT client wanting us to run RG-6 from one building to another to feed 3 computers and 3 VoIP phones off a RG-6. Superior Essex tell me they can custom make the wire on RG-59 or RG-11 and have RG-6, 2500 feet spool.
My question is can we put a RG45 to Coax converter at each end and still have the network work well 550 meter down the road?
I had suggested we bring in high-speed down to the other building, but the IT client tells me VoIP phones over VPN don't work to well, I don't believe them on that!
Has anyone set up such a network?

VOIP over VPN can be spotty. there is no QOS over the internet. I run my office on verizon FIOS with a VPN to our corp office and have no troubles with 6 phones and heavy computer use over the VPN.

6000ft over single pair cat3. It's still not "right" (fiber would be best) but it beats the hell out of some frankensteinian coax solution.

They're sensitive to spikes, use their protection.
